    Holiday 2012...

Looks like the dogs had a great time. I know huskies are intelligent and resourceful but. . . . How did they put that tent up though ? as there didn't appear to be any humans around.
  8. We use the term "Doing your research first" a lot. However what it all really boils down to is. . . These dogs require a MASSIVE amount of your time and attention. If you do not have a large secure garden (solid minimum 6ft fences) for them to play in they will require a LOT of walking. average of 6 miles per day. They are very intelligent dogs and can require a lot of play time and stimulation to stop them getting bored. A bored husky is a devious destructive husky. They are pack animals and especially love to be around people, they tend not to like being left alone. If you go out they may howl and try to escape to find company. To achieve this they will quite happily chew and break through doors, walls, windows, crates etc. All of this will take a large toll on your bank balance and your personal time. Have you thought that if you get up at 6am to start getting ready for work that you'll now have to get up at least half an hour to an hour earlier to give them a good walk before you leave. You can never "simply" answer the door to a delivery man or friend. First you have to Secure the dog otherwise he'll shoot through your legs and be gone down the street at full on husky speeds. Unless you teach them to walk nicely they WILL drag you everywhere. They will try to dislocate your arm to get at cats and squirrels and to play with other dogs. You can never simply "go for a walk" you will be stopped by almost every passing stranger who wants to pet and talk about your beautiful dog. After the age of about 6 months Huskies don't do recall. So you can never let them off lead in public unless it's in a fully secure area. Up until then YOU are their whole world and they want to be with you. However after about 6 months they get really curious about everything else in the world. If they get out the door / window or slip their collar or harness on a walk You are in for a LONG chase. Because they are on lead all the time they have no "road sense" and will run straight out into traffic while playing the "chase me" game with you. they will happily eat anything that is not nailed down. They can and do learn how to open cupboards and fridges to get at food. Some Huskies have sensitive stomachs and it can take a while to find the food that doesn't give them the runs. Things like bread, a single slice will give most huskies the runs. So when you've had toast in the morning and forgot to put the bread away. You come home from shopping a few hours later to find the bread gone and large puddles of runny poo all over every room. Sure a lot of these things are common to most breeds of dog However Huskies really do seem determined to make your life hell. There is fur on the carpets, fur in your food, fur in your bed, fur on all your clean ironed clothes, fur on the furniture. Slobber and nose prints on the windows. All of this and more. This is why there are so many Huskies in rehome centres, People simply do not understand what they are letting themselves in for. It takes a very special type of person to be "owned by a Husky". YOU have to change you life around to fit the Husky in. I hope you can become "special" like us.
  9. We've had 3 for two years Echo (GSD) Darwin and Daughtry (Huskies), and we've just added Malaki (Huskamute) The only problem is walking them. When you first get them (especially if the are a rescue) they tend to pull and drag like crazy. So you have to take the extra time away from your others to give them some one on one lead training to teach them to "walk nicely" We are currently in this stage with Malaki. He's a Huskamute and by size he's more Malamute than Husky, So he's a strong lad. He's also only around 18 months old so is very playful. His walking is coming along nicely and soon I should be able to walk all 4 with not much extra effort than I did with 3. On a normal walk I can walk the other 3 holding the leads in just one hand. The three leads are joined together with mountaineering Carabiners. As for the rest, When you have one Husky you have lots of hair, when you have 4 you STILL have lots of hair. As long as you can afford the Vets fees for shots and boosters and the cost of the extra food then there's no problem. Once the walking is under control 4 is no different than one.
  10. Daughtry never barks, She will "talk" some times. Darwin Woos at you then if after a while he doesn't get what he's after will issue a single bark. Malaki woos and barks in equal amounts. However he barks at echo to get her to go play in the garden. Echo Barks if someone knocks on the door. Or if someone she doesn't know approaches us in the street and makes some sort of contact.
  11. A year is ok just don't run them too hard or fast. I have a walky dog and my boy Darwin had me up to 25mph.
