  1. Zoya is going to the vet tomorrow.  She has another ear infection. She gets them this time of year through fall harvest time. Due largely to pollen and field dust. So going to have her ears flushed. Then she also has an area on her muzzle that seems irritated. It itches quite often, still has all the fur intact, but want the vet to take a look. We have an issue with ground wasps in our back yard, and I suspect, based on previous encounters she has had, that she has taken it on the chin from them. And the third concern is her weight. Since her knee injury almost two years ago, Zoya does not care to run as she once did. Perhaps because when she tore her knee up, it was while running.  She has gradually puffed out the last year or so.  We've recently put her on a reduced calorie kibble that she likes, but it is too soon to tell if it has been affective.  Will know more tomorrow after the vet visit.

  2. One place I don't take my dogs is to dog parks.  Too often we have issues in our area with kennel cough, parvo, distemper being passed around at dog parks.  Don't have any control over how responsible others are for the dogs in their care.  Some are diligent about keeping their dogs up on meds, while some are not.  Just because a dog has been vaccinated for parvo, for example, does not make the dog immune. Play it safe and get to the vet.  It may be something simple, but could be something serious.

  3. Our two males tangle.  I grab one of them by their rear legs and pull while yelling KNOCK IT OFF!  Then I throw a pillow or stuffed toy at them.  Used to be an every other day happening. Now it's maybe once every two to three weeks.  Rohn is a bit smaller, and gets the worst of it.  He has a few battle scars on his neck, covered by fur.  Luke usually comes out unscathed.  It actually sounds worse than what it is. Still, it's unnerving.

  4. Well, each dog is unique, so experience in this case, may not benefit you much.  We have three Huskies right now.  One female, and two males.  The last Husky male we got, was a rescue, and about the same age as our other male.  We've had some serious fights to break up in the last six weeks.  Sometimes they seem to get along fine, and other times they seem to want to kill one another.  It just takes time, and that time can be many months to a year, before they are comfortable and get along without issue.  Sometimes, it only takes a few weeks.

We keep our one male in the kitchen, the rescue male as the run of the foyer and hall, and our female is in the living room, during the day.  It seems to work out fine for us.  We use child gates to keep them separated, so they can all see one another, just don't have direct contact with one another.

It also helps a great deal if you can take them out on walks with one another.

  5. We gonnas be makin zat lime chickn dis weekend.  That was my feeble attempt at writing like a dog.  I remember seeing the pics of Tunes when she was first at the rescue in Texas.  Poor girl.  To see her now, you'd never know it was the same sweetheart.

  6. Garlic and onion are both toxic, but the amount of garlic in the brewer's yeast tablets is not that great.  One thing to keep in mind, some of the people that work at pet supply stores, are not employees of the pet store, but are actually employed by a company that has product on the shelves at the pet supply store.  So sometimes, the information they delve out may be biased.  I don't give my dogs any garlic.  The amount of garlic you'd need to give them to ward off fleas may be more than what they should be given anyway.

  7. There have been dogs in our area, that have died from contracting lepto.  We live in a rural and agricultural area, abound with deer, raccoons, skunks, bob cats, coyotes, farm animals, etc.  Two years ago, lepto reached epidemic proportions in our area.  Most all vets recommended getting dogs, especially if one lived in a rural area, vaccinated for lepto.  I have discussed with our vet, the risks and benefits on all vaccinations our dogs receive.  You can never be 100 percent sure on anything, and I trust our vet to give me the straight scoop, and so far he has been above board with me on all topics.  Our dogs are vaccinated for lepto as well as Lyme's each year.
