  1. If a dog poops, it is often times that they will pee just before.  I had a conversation with our vet about a year ago.  This is pure conjecture, so take it for what it's worth.  But when a dog urinates, especially a female, it will often times stimulate the intestines, resulting in the need to poop.  Point being, there may be a medical reason for the pee, like a UTI or some other condition.  When she squats to urinate, she then needs to poop as well.  Vet also said that most dogs, if they have a need to poop, will often times pee first, or in the case of a female, may squat to pee and immediately go into position to poop.  Too much info perhaps.  So it could also be there may be a medical reason for the poo, like a dietary condition, Krones disease, hard to say.  Might be a good idea to discuss with your vet and see what he/she thinks.

Yeah do not be daft.  I am, but they still let me chime in from time to time.  Tell your dad, if it's of any value, that I struggled with the fact that when we lost our first Husky, Elke, and when we recently lost our rescue Husky, Eisa, that the grief felt was very much worse than the grief felt for either of my parents.  And in the end, I have to believe that was because it was I who made the decision of when the passing would take place, added to the fact that both of these Huskies were dependent upon my wife and I for everything, and letting them pass on was in some way, a failure on our part for keeping them safe and healthy.

  3. Some event took place, or so it would seem.  Just be patient and gently coax through each time.  Eventually, it should not be an issue.  We are having a similar issue with Rohn.  He is simply skiddish when entering a room or anywhere that has a non-carpeted floor.  We have ceramic tile in the foyer and hall, and laminate in the kitchen. So there are carpet runners where feasible.  Otherwise, he cowers down, whines, retreats, but eventually charges ahead into the room.

  4. We have moved ours off puppy food between 10 and 12 months.  But certainly that is not a hard and fast rule.  You may have an issue where your dog has simply become a picky eater, or may have simply tired of the regular food.  If you do make a change, try to do it gradually to avoid stomach upset.  As an alternative, you can steam some rice and mix with boiled chicken bits.  Feed that for a day, and then start to mix the new food with the rice and boiled chicken, increasing the dog food amount and reducing the rice and chicken every day.  Takes from seven to ten days to safely transition a dog's food.

  5. You are asking questions about medications and products that I am not familiar with.  We use Frontline Plus on our dogs.  We have not had a flea problem.  I do know that fleas reproduce at an alarming rate, and it only takes a few days and they can become overwhelming. Once fleas are inside, the best method to rid them from a house, is to set off bombs that fog the building. Everyone has to be out for the duration.

Unless someone chimes in that has dealt with the medications and products you are working with, it might not hurt to check with your vet to see if there could be any inverse reaction.

  6. Unfortunately, quality can be expensive.  You might look for Diamond Naturals. They make Taste of the Wild, which you might want to consider.  Here are a few things to keep in mind.

A lot of brands of dog food contain corn, wheat, soy, and other filler grains.  Dogs are often allergic to wheat. Corn does not provide much nutrition and can be a source of deadly aflatoxin.  Soy is a cheap source of protein.  So look for foods that do not contain corn, wheat, or soy.

By-products are a good thing to avoid as well. Now not all by-products are bad, but many are, so there is a good chance that if there are by-products in the food, a good portion of them are not the good ones.

Meat or meat meal is good. Meat meal is the meat without the water. So if you see meat at the top of the ingredient list, the actual content will be less than indicated by listing position. On the other hand, if you see meat meal at the top of the list, the content is in the majority, so that's good.

Hope this gives you some reference points to consider. I hope I've explained things well enough to understand, but if you have questions, post here and we will try to resolve them for you.

  7. Historically, most breeds were developed "for a purpose". This seems to be for nostalgia's sake, for lack of a better term. What happens most often in these type of endeavors, is a fracture occurs between the parties involved, and then you have two or three groups of idiots messing with Mother Nature, instead of just one group.  One example of such a fracture is the Native American Indian Dod (NAID).  Another fracture occurred with a group trying to re-establish Seppala blood lines.

  8. That's what I have started calling Rohn.  If I am home, Rohn will let me know if he needs to go potty.  If I am not home, he will make no effort to let Sally know if he needs to go potty, and he will go behind a chair or other out of the way place, and drop a few of what should be lawn chocolates, not carpet chocolates. This tells me two things: Rohn knows dropping his new moniker in the house is not acceptable when I am home,  and doing so when I am not home, can be blamed on Zoya.  Actually, I am stumped on this.  Maybe it has something to do with the fact that I usually am the one who takes Rohn out for potty breaks. Any thoughts?

  9. The National Weather Service has issued a Winter Storm Warning for much of Iowa. Our area in eastern Iowa, is looking at freezing rain starting in about an hour (1:15 am), and lasting until about 6:00 pm tomorrow when it switches over to snow. Expected to get 1/4" to 1/2" of ice, followed by 1" to 4" of snow.  Not looking forward to tomorrow morning. Off this week, so don't have to drive to work, but then may be stuck at home for the duration.  Should have bought that sled.
