  1. That Lab was impossible, I mean IMPOSSIBLE. She would seem to catch on to things while we worked with her and the next day completely be back at square one....we were chasing our tails, she had no retention at all. I often wonder if she was truly disabled. Probably contributed to her being dumped in our area (we are very rural). Our Siberians caught on quick enough with only a few minor corrections, she didn't learn despite different training tactics, trainers, I dare say you name it we tried it....Slammed my head against the wall for a year and a half, re-homed her to a couple that were willing and able to take on a challenging dog. They are still throwing money at trainers to help them with her....
  2. Sounds like there has been a severe lack of socialization...and perhaps leadership. When out and about you cannot have that "fear" in the back of your mind that this is a wolfdog, they will sense your insecurity and thus amplify their insecurities...This is detrimental in an already weary breed. Having 3 wolfdogs in my pack I have to be on top of their socialization, both human and animal, as well as always be their confidant pack leader. Basic-Advanced training is a must if you can find a program that will allow you.
  3. We fostered a Labrador that had similar bad habits, we never could break her of them....we reprimanded her as soon as we caught the act, or the thought process but it never did sink in...I don't think she was capable of learning. My Siberians were easy enough to correct but not the Lab...and they told me Siberians were the difficult ones to train.
  4. I used to volunteer for Adopt-A-Husky Northwest, we took owner surrenders, I believe the parent group does as well. www.adoptahusky.com
  5. Denali's goggles softened quite a bit, Dakota and Juneau lost theirs completely... Denali 14 weeks Denali 14 months
  6. Congrats on the new addition!!! And thank you for giving such a beauty a second chance
  7. Agree, this poem is heartbreaking and all too familiar
  8. No big deal, a lot of really happy husky homes start out this way I certainly did not do enough research before we got our first, now we have 9! It was not without help and advise that our pack became harmonious though! Start by getting yourself a breed specific book...I really liked New Owners Guide: Siberian Huskies by Kathleen Kanzler. Kathleen is very well known and respected in the Siberian Husky world. As for feeding, get on a consistent diet...if you don't know what was being fed expect some intestinal distress while she adjusts to the new diet. This could take a couple weeks, depending on how rich the food you are feeding is compared to what was being fed. Feed small meals frequently, preferably 3 times a day. My last was eating between 1/3-1/2 cups 3 times per day at that age...you have to be in tune to body condition and over all health to get just the right balance. This group is always available for questions Good luck! and pics please!!
  9. Very pretty! Congrats on your newest addition
  10. For sure have her checked for intestinal parasites! They can cause some big issues in growing puppies...Also, Siberian Huskies are a medium sized breed bred to operate on minimal amounts of food so over feeding is easy when we start thinking about how "big" they are. I always suggest breed specific books to first time owners, get to know and understand the breed to best integrate your life to them. They are not "fat"dogs so as long as you don't feel prominent ribs and their waist isn't too hour glass shaped they are most likely fine. Regular vet checks (weigh ins) will help keep track of your pups overall health. At 8 weeks old I was feeding approx 1/2 cup 3x's a day.
  11. 1) has she been wormed? 2) How much food per bowl? Over feeding a Siberian will give them the runs bad...especially if the food is rich. Siberians aren't a breed that eats off the charts, they often require less food than what manufactures recommend...Also you may want to start thinking about food allergies and sensitivities. Siberians are prone to sensitive tummy troubles and food allergies...I have one allergic to grains, dyes, and preservatives.
  12. Isn't it amazing how much they change!! My grey boy has been my biggest change
  13. Congratz!! That is quite an achievement!! I started a new diet...14 days later I lost 2 weeks :/
  14. Well I shouldn't mention it just started snowing again, but more husky snow play!! They are really happy, and will be really TIRED later
  15. In working dogs Siberian Huskies having dew claws is acceptable and do not need to be removed...however if your dog's dew claws are detached from the side of the leg and floppy (risk of tearing off) they should be removed....it's easy enough for a vet to do
  16. Diesel's duo, The three pupsketeers, that's all I got LOL
  17. We just got this snow right after Denali left, we've been getting teaser snows that cover the ground and melt in a day...this has been around for a week...fingers crossed my harnesses will get here before it all goes away!
  18. Thank you they really make it too easy to get the good shots though Everyone got into the play mood when we got him home this morning There was a lot of excitement around here!
  19. We're all so happy he's back, it was a Looooong week!
  20. The boys having a moment Juneau is happy to have Denali back Handsome free stack MONSTER! playing with his "girls" Snow dog Rockie even joins the play time
  21. My first two, Dakota and Juneau, were from breeders...my third addition (non-husky) was a Rescue after a week he settled right in like he had always been a part of this family, Diamond our 4th was a bit more of a transition only because of the isolation we had to keep her in after the surgery, Timber (non-husky) our 5th took a bit of time to get him to adjust but he was so poorly socialized he needed some major rehabilitation (that I was aware of and willing to take on), Tikaani (non-husky) just stepped right into our lives without any adjustment period, Aspen was from a breeder (non-husky) planned to be an agility partner and trail dog eventually, Denali was a breeder purchase he is my conformation dog, and Riley was found on the road taken in as a "found" dog that never was spoken for...he's still adjusting to not climbing the fence but gets along very well with everyone! My suggestion is keep rescue as your first option for companion animals, every dog deserves a second chance Most rescues will allow a "meeting period" for your current family pets to be sure the fit is right for everyone Good luck!
  22. I experienced this the other day with my youngest! I was cooking and he decided to lay right behind me while I was at the stove...I nearly tripped over him as I stepped back...poor kid was as scared as I was!
