hi - i cant help specifically with your area

I've taken to storm to puppy classes and its been really useful, however i would check with them before hand whether they have knowledge of huskys cos one i spoke to had no clue and said that they can learn recall & be trusted of lead etc.

The one i took storm to asked me whether i was interested in even bothering with trying to teach him 'heel' i did make me laugh cos she knew it wasnt worth the effort!!

Its really helped to socialise him and reinforced the obediance i was doing regularly throughout the day/week.

Having said that he will do what ever i ask him as long as there is a treat involved or he is suddenly deaf!!!! lol....

see i don't think it's 100% necessary to have a trainer who knows huskies inside and out. Mine didn't, but because i did, i ignored the bits he tried to convince me on (the off lead stuff etc) BUT i did work on heel and recall as it was a secure area and i thought, better to do it there than to not, and at least she now has some recall. If it is a secure area (with a puppy don't worry about 6ft fencing...ours didn't have 6ft, but because there is so much going on she didn't try and leave). She has some manners with regards to heel, but only if i carry on working with her, rather than letting her get away with it.

He convinced one family to let theirs off, and he ran away from them and luckily went straight to the vets  - they were lucky.

my advice is to definitely go and do all the exercises, even if you think you won't need it, it will help and she may even learn something!

We go to puppy class but like you say ignore the off lead bits, max does great recall but when it comes to him following off lead heel then yea dont go there. I didnt mind the trainers apart from the "no one here cant handle their dog" as i get pulled along the fence as max wantedd to visit his friend, but last week during recall one of the ladies said "make your self the best thing since sliced bread" so im calling max and they say put your hands out and as they come to you pull your hands into your chest so they learn to break. Followed by a story of blah blah. To the point now...

I called max and he came to me like a furry bullet and the trainer didnt say nothing but the other trainer almost in a my fault way told me that coz max has a lot of energy I need to call him more softly. The first time max bit my thumb as well.

Sorry I wasn't very clear! Whenever they do heel work they always ask whether I want to participate. I do cos it does engage his brain but ivthink they want me to have realistic expectations. I don't practice this at home tho

as for the recall again she didn't want us to have high expectations. Everytime he runs to the door to escape! But we do practice this at home as again it's brain engagement & we may have incidents which occur where he gets out for what ever reason (let's hope not) & we need to call him. You never know if wevpractice it, it may work but that's if the occation arises I wouldn't rely on it...he defo turns deaf when he wants but hears the slightest rustle of a treat bag!!!

Storm was a rescue with no training What so ever at 18mths & we were his 4th home so it's been a huge learning curve for him.....in 7 wks he's now an amazing dog.

Sorry Claire, yeah you werent very clear lol!

I would have weeks where Eika was the best in the class, other weeks she wouldn't listen and i nearly cried (i had had very little sleep that night!) - my trainer was actually shocked as they have had loads of huskies go through there and none of them were as well behaved as Eika, nor were their owners disciplined and they didn't know what they got themselves into. A lot of people, as we all know, get huskies on a whim and my trainer thought i had done that too - i hadn't - and he soon realised that. There was one family who came to watch some classes, who owned a Northern Inuit, and it was the day i was there....they said to one of the other trainers - i want ours to behave like that - how do i do it? Amanda (a trainer) was like she's been working really hard with her, so to get your dog like that you have to work very very hard....some people think it's easy. But you have to put the work in at home as well, i used to train her several times a day on all sorts of things.

At the end of the novice classes he said, you have done really well, better than i expected...he was genuinely really impressed and that means a lot to me, considering who he is (if any of you read Your Dog, or whatever it's called, he does the trainer page - Charlie Claricoates) and the fact he doubted me soooo much at the beginning, made him eat his words - i loved the fact i changed people's minds about her!

i'm a bit of a proud husky mummy too. when storm arrived (origionally just as a foster) he was described as having terrible behaviour & had seperation anxiety...and boy he did! So that i had support as well off i trotted to the class...oh my the first night was hurrendous, of course all of the other owners were petrified by his pulling, jumping around and the fact he was hooked up to my waist belt! He howled like a banchee and he became petrified of one of the other dogs (this dog wasnt socialised and very aggressive and they were shaking something noisy at him...storm hated it)

anyway, we practised and practised. i reduced his walking a bit so we spent more time playing together and doing obediance which i felt was more beneficial than making him tired from walking alone - it would have actually been easier to have just walked him for 5miles but i felt that was not dealing with the issue. we practised at every opportunity including out and about - while walking, in the car, in the pet shop (why did i bother trying this one!!!!) etc due to other plans we couldnt go the next week so we had a whole 2 wks to practice. when we went back...they couldnt believe the difference :D

one dog owner said to me...there was a husky who came a few wks ago and he had such bad behaviour, but yours is great (as he sat by my side all relaxed!) she was amazed when i said it was the same dog :D:lol::D:lol:

now the trainer uses storm as an example of how behaviour can change with LOADS of time and effort.

Dont get me wrong he isnt always the model student but 95% of the time he is...but i guess thats a sibe thing....they gotta have that last 5% to keep you on your toes!! ;)

I found the classes really supportive too and whilst i dont need to go everyweek i think its a good reminder for me and him. i also love to meet the other dogs just arriving (particularly the rescue ones) to remind me what can happen if i dont keep up the work with storm. This is storms 4th and LAST home :)

Now we need to find him a friend :D

if anyone is interested - i didnt go to a specific puppy class due to his age (18mths) and how bad he was origionally - he would have scared those tiny little pups & probably tried to squeek them - he embarrasingly tried hunting a little chwawya (??spelling) ! we went to a 'drop in' behaviour clinic which was ran afterwards. £3.50 per class for an hour...and for Storm it was worth every penny.

Hey

we take shiloh to puppy classes :) he completed the puppy foundation course end of may and he is now in week 4 of the puppy improvers :)

totally different dog aswell to what he was before the classes- he actually listens to us now and understands the commands- i had no clue what so ever how to train a dog before hand

our trainer specialises in border collies and didnt really know much about huskies but he did go and do research into the breed and now he prob knows more than we do  he loves shiloh to bits :)

i would recommend classes to anyone.....if we ever got another dog then i wouldnt even hesitate :)

we have just done the basics chick...sit, down, leave it, recall, lead work- although it does not work outside the class with shiloh!!!

also done stuff about checking your dogs health...what signs to look out for if they are ill or have an infection

the improvers is just going over what we did in the foundation but in a little more depth and without treats :) x x x
