i cant open the link can someone copy and paste the story pleeeeeeeeeeease???

If you were pulled over for not wearing a seatbelt, you might expect a bit of a slap on the wrists and then be sent on your way with maybe a small fine to make sure you remember to buckle up next time.

But a 70-year-old driver from Monmouthshire, who has reportedly recently recovered from a stroke and has a heart condition, was treated to a slightly more aggressive response. The police chased after his Range Rover, smashed his side window and windscreen and dragged him out of the car when he stopped after a 17 minute pursuit. The situation escalated after Robert Whatley was pulled over for not wearing his seatbelt in September last year. Caerphilly magistrates court was told yesterday that the car had lurched forward and struck the police office dealing with the incident. Whatley told the court that he then drove off as he felt the matter had been dealt with and he was worried about his health.

Police then set off after Whatley with their lights and sirens on, following him on a 17 minute chase where he stayed under the speed limit and stopped just before a stinger device that police had thrown across the road. He said he thought the police were giving him an escort home.

One officer then smashed his side window in with his baton, while a second jumped on the bonnet of the car and tried to kick in the windscreen. Once they had broken through the window, they dragged Whatley out of the car. The chase and the officer's actions were all captured on the camera inside the police car, click at the bottom of the page to watch it.

"I couldn't believe what was happening," Whatley told The Daily Mail. "The police went completely over the top – you would have thought I had robbed a bank. I was terrified when they started smashing in the window and trying to kick in the windscreen."

Whatley admitted his motoring offences to the court, and was found guilty of driving without a seatbelt, failing to stop for a police officer and having a number plate and tinted windows that didn't adhere to regulations. He was fined £235 with £300 costs. Gwent Police have confirmed that two officers have been suspended from duty pending an internal inquiry into their actions following Whatley's complaint to the IPCC.

Deputy Chief Constable Carmel Napier said: "We expect the highest professional standards of police officers and we can assure Mr Whatley and the public that this matter will be thoroughly investigated."

Are you lot mad there is a old saying of "don't let the truth get in the way of a good story"

I for one am sick of these type of story's lets dissect it a little

not wearing a seatbelt : He broke the law

70-year-old driver from Monmouthshire : did the police know this NO

recently recovered from a stroke and has a heart condition : SO did they know before hand NO

17 minute pursuit : What did you want them to do let him go ?

the car had lurched forward and struck the police office dealing with the incident : if he'd been in the USA he would of right been shot for using his car as a weapon.

Am sorry you all feel for this guy you are am sure only saying it because of his age which is wrong if he'd have been 17 you would of all been says joy rider should be hung :(

I hate to say but I do think there is more to this than meets the eye. The guy hit a copper pulling away (before the copper managed to finish giving him a ticket) then failed to stop for sirens.

He also has previous for violent behaviour which they would have known.

Overreaction a bit.... but this is why I think (in America) everyone should have a driving test and not just 16 year old new drivers. Once you start getting up there in age, your mind tends to go and you dont always know whats going on around you.

If the 70 year old man honestly thought the police who had sirens blazing and were following him for 17 minutes were there to escort him home, he does not need a license to drive as his mind is starting to go a bit.

This still does not warrant the reaction he got though.

True about the seat belt. they did know his age as they stopped him before the 17 minute chase and maybe he told them about his heart condition when they stopped him first

Poor bugger, they did go quite rough tho, there was no need to smash the window screen as he was already pulled over and engine off (if u watch the video) ok the side ones are ok to do as they are easy replaceable
