my poor nanuq is not a well boy today. Had to take him to the vets yest as his eyes were running green and he had green snot all over his nose, sneezing like mad and reverse sneezing. As per usual the vet didnt really know!( suprise, suprise)...could be an allergy, could be a cold..So sent home with antibotics and a trial course of antihistamines...just in case he has hayfever! Well the antihistamines wiped him out and he slept all day, so thats not on, so ill try at night but hes hardly moved all day today, even when Nina is over trying to get a play out of him. So im hoping the antibiotics kick in soon, as we are taking the two of them, in the tourer for two weeks holiday soon and i dont want the poor boy to be ill. Best thing is...vet costs...£58....after he gives me the script, he says if the antihistamines work ,you can buy piriton in the chemist for £5....huh???? Then why not say that in the first place and save me some cash u dork!! (ranting now..)

Aww bless Nooks poor boy. . . sad.gif

Vets are like GP's they know a little about a lot and so make generalisations. unsure.gif

They try the obvious,

if that don't work then do some cultures and bloodwork (more money)

to try to get a bit more specific.

Then more meds (more money)

Meanwhile they learn something new.. . . yaybiggrin.gif

(Ahem. . . at your expense !!!! ohmy.gif)

Aww I am sorry poor Nauq is feeling poorly. Vets are a complete rip off on occasions like this. The majority of the meds they issue are human meds so I always ring my vet first for some advice - which is free :) they usually suggest something to try and then err on the side of caution by saying if he/she is no better bring them in. This gives you a bit of lea way to try something out and if they don't appear to be getting better you then have the option of taking them to the vets.

I hope Nanuq gets better soon :)

+1 Andy - you hit the nail on the head here - I work for GP's and this is exactly what they do! That and refer to a Consultant Specialist. (which actually I am pleased about cos otherwise I would be out of a job lol)

No all human meds are okay for dogs. For example, ibuprofen (brand name Motrin) is quite dangerous for dogs. They need a special formulation so it doesn't cause liver damage, and even then certain Labs can be sensitive to it. We lost our Lab x recently to liver failure, so this is a bit of a sore spot for me.

In humans, green snot indicates an infection, not allergies. I don't know if it's the same for dogs, but a couple days on the antibiotics should help, if it is. I hope he feels better soon.

Sounds similar to what Nikita had the other week. She has green snot in one of her nostrils and was feeling very sorry for herself. She was put on Cefalexin 500mg caps, three times a day for a week then had to go back. She was started to feel better after a week but was still a bit lethargic and more cuddly than normal. They put her on the caps for another 5 days. By the end she was back to her normal bratty self.

Hope Nanuq gets feeling better soon..... *hugz*
