You would think that would be illegal...how can they say " oh we don't sensor our content"ohmy.gif ...by selling those books/allowing ppl to sell books like that, imo they are promoting it / allowing cruelty to continue.angry.gif...

If you wish to express your concerns/opinions don't forget there is a link at the end of the article....

---------------------------------------------------

When Tara Stermer, a canine aggression and behavior specialist, discovered that several dog fighting books were available for sale at Amazon.com, she was appalled.

Stermer has been fighting against breed prejudice and working to rehabilitate dogs for the past 23 years. She was dishearted and bewildered to see a huge retailer like Amazon.com profiting from books that promote an illegal, cruel activity like dog fighting.

Stermer wrote to the online retail giant about their decision to carry books that openly promote, or teach about, the illegal sport of dog-fighting. Amazon sent her a response advising that they do not censor what they sell. They rely on the consumer to make their own decisions.

Stermer found this response somewhat mystifying in light of the fact that Amazon chooses not to carry some movies based on content.

Stermer works hard to inform the public about humane canine education and advises communities about how they can work their dogs in good ways, instead of using them as status symbols. She is saddened to know that any member of our society can get their hands on a "how-to" dog fighting book, even our nation's children.

Perhaps Amazon.com should hear from individuals across the nation - individuals that do not want to see an illegal, cruel, inhumane activity such as dog-fighting, promoted by a major retailer.

An email link to Amazon.com has been provided for those wishing to express their opinion on this subject.

The bottom line - dog fighting is illegal. It is inhumane and cruel. Dog-fighting promotes other illicit behavior and has led to the heart-wrenching and unbelievable torture of far too many Pit Bulls across the nation. In no way, shape or form should this illegal activity be taught, promoted, nor profited from.

Just to play devils advocate here. The books that are showing up in that list are hardly "How to go dog fighting" type things. Just looking down the first page these things look like "History of fighting dogs" and the likes, which to be honest is nothing different than something being up there like "History of drugs" ..... Both are wrong. I would read a book on the world of gangsters and gangs etc, it doesnt neccesarily glorify them just because someone would like to read about where it came from etc. Personally I think amazon are right and it should be the people who choose. There is far too much censorship of "Read this and we'll end up doing it" mentality in this world as it is.

Type in bull fighting which is inhumane

Type in fox hunting which is inhumane

Just sayin its sometimes gotta be a case of "Enough of the censorship already, if I dont want it I wont buy it" ..

I agree with Marc here. While I find dog fighting disgusting, looking at that list there seems to be only one book that is a 'how to', the rest seem to be more a history of the fighting breeds.

I have read lots of books about serial killers and the like, but I am not going to go out and start killing (though there are few that would be at the top of my list if I ever didwink.gif).

I've had my own experience with Amazon. I contacted them after I became aware of a convicted sexual predator having books about his innappropriate life as a teacher at a high school written as a fiction. His fiction resembles greatly his actual crimes, and detailed how someone could get into the public school system for the purposes of engaging in this illegal behavior without getting caught. I asked them if they would at least attatch a warning to those particular books and they declined to do so because they felt it was censorship.

On the one hand I'm apalled that books on dog fighting or other morally bankrupt sorts of behaviors are sold there...on the other hand, Too often I've seen people give away their rights in the name of being protected. It makes me sad. I have to agree with alot of what's been previously stated...if you don't like it, don't buy it.

I've seen books on there that tell you how to train your dog for a match and how to breed fighting dogs...don't we already have a hard time placing breeds in homes because of the stereotype?? (not on there atm when i checked but have seen them there since i saw that article)

and again I understand if you don't like it dont looks at it/ read it but then should we say the same thing about animal abuse? if you don't like it don't look at it??? I doubt any animal lover would agree to that.....

and I understand about sensership but if they don't allow child porn..which i illegal i don't think they should allow certain books since animal abuse is illegal, especially books that tell you how to train your dog for a match....

just my opinion

I think history is very important.. even the horrific stuff, it must be out there so that it is learned from and not repeated.. HOWEVER selling anything that is a "how to" guide on anything illegal is very very wrong! Yes you can argue that if these people want to do it they will find the information somewhere but why make it easy for them to just buy these things untracabley online!!!???
