Am a bit nervous about...

Smokey

Recommended Posts

So I'm gonna see Eric, Lana and Thunder after the holidays! yay! But I'm a bit worried about Smokey's overzealous, unsocialized manners (dog aggression?). I'm thinking about either leaving him or muzzling him at the dog park, both of which seem really harsh to me. Any suggestions?

Anyway, I also found this informative (not that this is gonna happen).

Instructions on How to Break up a Dog Fight

  1. 1 Avoid hitting the dogs or getting your hands anywhere near their mouths. Hitting could make the situation worse and could cause the attack to be redirected toward you.
  2. 2 Enlist another person and separate the dogs by grabbing their hind legs and walking them backward (like wheelbarrows). Secure the dogs away from each other before releasing them.
  3. 3 Spray the aggressor with a water hose or, if necessary, a fire extinguisher. If this doesn't make a difference, aim for the nostrils.
  4. 4 Hold a broom between dogs to separate them.
  5. 5 Use a noise-making device such as an air horn to drive them apart.
  • Some dogs behave differently than others when in a fight. Dogs that were bred for fighting, such as pit bulls or rottweilers, may not be easily distracted and require stronger intervention techniques. With male dogs, for example, you may need to grab the testicles to get their attention.
  • Be extremely cautious. Do not place yourself between the fighting dogs.

I've just spent 5 minute laughing sooooo hard. . . .

A FIRE EXTINGUISHER !!!! ohmy.gifohmy.gifohmy.gifohmy.gifohmy.gifohmy.gif

A head collar as Nix suggests will give you more control, if he "goes" for another dog.

Also consider a muzzle, so even if he does get close, he can't inflict any damage.

Is there anywhere you can let them all off lead to socialise.

A secure back garden ??

One of the problems (we have this with Echo) is that when a dog is ON lead

and is approached by another dog, the fight or flight reflex kicks in.

However because they are attached to a lead and so CAN'T RUN from the approaching dog

they see their only recourse is to FIGHT. And so they get aggressive.

The same dog when encountering dogs OFF lead (in a secure area) will run and play and be more social.

Because he/she has the choice of approaching or being able to back away.

I hope this helps to put things into perspective

You know the best way to stop dogs from fighting is to stick your finger up their backside, a bit gross but true!

But otherwise agree with the above xx

Oh, Lordy in that case I'd deffo go with the fire extinguisher. . . LOL laugh.giflaugh.giflaugh.giflaugh.gif

We've used the grabbing back legs and hauling apart. Works a treat biggrin.gif
