Outrage ... man lived in the German town of Schwerte

A GERMAN pensioner is in hiding after hurling five newborn puppies to their deaths from the roof of his fifth floor apartment.

Jobless Reinhard Robben, 62, threw the animals from the building then lied to police in the western town of Schwerte  saying his dog had bitten the pups to death.

An autopsy showed they had no wounds from their mother.

Robben, who faces animal cruelty charges, has since received numerous death threats from outraged locals and has gone into hiding.

He had told a German newspaper: "I was overwhelmed by the situation. My dog bit the pups to death out of jealousy. I actually meant for them to land in the rainwater gutter."

But vet Dr Stefan Wolf said: "All the pups were healthy, there were no bite marks, just marks where they landed when they hit the ground."

Flowers have been laid on the street where the pups died.

One woman wept outside Robben's apartment, saying: "How can one human being be so heartless towards God's creatures?"

Divorcee Robben often placed his dog Icebear into an animal home to be looked after when he was in hospital for various ailments.

Dr Wolf added: "All it would have taken would be one phone call to the home and they would have collected the pups."
