This is a little older but I still think it should be shared with everybody. My mom and I followed the story of Target from the beginning and cried when we found out he died. Please read this is Target's full story.

"In the Fall of 2009, while stationed at Dand Aw Patan, Afghanistan, just a couple hundred meters from Pakistan, I had the priviledge of becoming friends with the most unlikely of comrades in a war zone. Target, along with two other strays, Rufus and Sasha made their way into our lives on that little Afghan Border Patrol compound we called "home". Target was a gentle and kind soul, you could tell this as soon as you spent a couple of minutes with her. The living conditions on Dand Patan were anything but civil, as we scraped by on little food the first couple of months there and we were constantly on guard. On the night of February 11th, 2010 a suicide bomber walked onto the compound and proceeded to make his way towards our sleeping quarters. Target, Rufus and Sasha could sense something was not right with this man and attacked him thwarting his plans of walking straight into the sleeping quarters and detonating himself while people rested and called loved ones back home. Target being the resilient creature she was not only survived being shot, ran over, beat and being blown up, are you starting to see how she "earned" her name, she gave birth to puppies just two days after the attack.

Target was rescued just a couple of months after we left Dand Patan and I volunteered to take her in and give her a loving home. Target came to the United States with much fanfare as she was rescued with a joint effort put together by Hope For Warriors foundation, Puppy Rescue Mission and Nowzad Dogs. CNN, ABC, CBS all did immediate national stories about Target and Rufus coming to America and the heroic deeds of the dogs. Target arrived at my home in Arizona on August 1st, 2010 and her story was spread across the country as we did TV interviews in New York City on the Mike Huckabee Show. The biggest moment was getting to take Target to be on the Oprah Winfrey Show in Chicago, that was amazing and Target handled it all in stride which was definitely her nature. The celebration culminated when Target was selected as a "Pet Hero of The Year" by FACC of Maricopa County in Phoenix, AZ. The FACC gala was formed to help raise money so one day there would be no "kill shelters" in Arizona.

It did not take long for Target to completely win our hearts and become a huge part of our family. Target was unusually easy going and very loving, especially with our 4 year old son, Tavius. Tavius and Target would spend day after day playing together or just hanging out watching TV. Unfortunately, in November of 2010, tragedy struck when Target got out of the backyard of our home in San Tan Valley, AZ and was turned over to the Pinal County Animal Care and Control which is where Target met her end, when she was erroneously euthanized by an officer working at the shelter. There has been a huge outcry for change in the shelter system and Target's Bunker is determined to make positive changes in a way to honor her legacy."
