How much was your first car?

Just wondering how much everyones first car was :) Looking to get mobile by early next year if I can pass my driving test. My friend is going to teach me as she's had her licence for more than 3 years and is over 21. I've driven a automatic before, but never a manual. I'm wondering if it's possible to get a car that doesn't need any work and that will get me from a to b for under £1000? What do you think? Could it happen?

I bought my current car, a 1998 citroen saxo 15 months ago for £300. I do 250 miles per week to work and back and i have had no issues.

Buying a car all depends on luck & knowledge, i bought this one and it had been looked after and only had 74k miles on the clock. (It's now done 86k) I could have spent £2000 on a car which may have broken beyond repair by now, which is where the luck part comes in.

est of luck in your quest though :D

My 1st car was £70 it had 4 months tax and nearly a full MOT it was a Nissan Stanza laugh.gif

Sue's 1st car was £100 Fiat uno which had full MOT.

For a grand with some good advice you could easily but a auto car only down side to them is they are bloody a expense thing to run for a 1st timer in fact for anyone I know, I got one :(

Down sides to a auto......

Most have big engines small ones are crap so fuel cost are high..........

Ins is higher on a auto god knows why but it always is...........

Repair cost are general higher as the cars are heaver.............

Tax will be max because of the engine size..........

You not passed your test yet so ins is going to max out on you as you will need a 2l min and that will cost you a lot more than the car you going to buy........

If I can thimnk of anything else to put you off this I'll come back and post it up but the best advice I can think of for now is....................

DON'T PASS ON A AUTO PASS ON A MANUAL :)

Mine was a rover 216 vanden plas £500 which i wrote off but it was sound after that a fiat uno turbo which i wrote off lmao but i never had to spend anything on them which was handy because even all those years ago i was paying BIG ££££ insurance

I've been driving autos for a few years now and prefer them to be honest especially in traffic, my current car is expensive to run but thats my fault for buying a stupid car not really because its automatic. i think you could get a good one for £1000 , my mum sold her Saxo a few years ago 1.4 auto for £1200 low milage and would do 40 mpg knocking around was cheap to insure for her but not sure about somebody that has just passed there test, She has a smart forfour auto now 1.3 that does even more mpg !!! major plus point boy racers avoid autos like the plague so there's a good chance you will get one that hasn't had the pants thrashed off it.

Dunc i've never had a higher insurance quote on an automatic !!! maybe just been lucky

If you have 2 cars both the same except 1 is a auto the ins group is always higher 2 groups higher in most cases some more ohmy.gif

E.G mine 2.0TDCi Zetec (130ps ) on a manual is group 19

2.0TDCi Zetec (130ps) on a auto is group 22

Guess which I got angry.gif

I find ins grouping don't make a great deal of difference unless your young or a new driver

I didn't know that !!! When i insured my current car they messed up and had it down as a manual when i phoned them to correct it the new policy that came was the same price but said auto ..... but thinking about it that might have been a typo and the price was right for an auto all along.

Just out of curiosity is yours a mondeo ? how happy are you with it if it is ? apart from it being 2 groups higher than a manual.

I paid a lot compared to most of of you, £3000 but that was for a 1962 Austin Healey 3000 mk2.I was 19. Insurance was about £50 (classic car insurance). ran it for 18 months with no cost. Took it off the road did a nut and bolt restoration at the cost of £10,000, ran it for another 2 years at no cost and sold it for £30,000 making a profit of £17,000 which paid for my brother and I's rallying for 2 seasons.

Young or just passed drivers who will not use their car every day should look at getting limited mileage which brings down the cost of insurance by £100s. Ours is set at 6000 miles we have done 5000 in 10 months so 6000 was about right.

I got my first car when I was 16 for $1000 from my uncle. It was a 1995 Nissan Maxima. He sadly screwed me over and didnt tell me the car needed $4000 worth of work. Even after I fixed all that the car was still a pain in the rear. My parents got tired of having to constantly pick me up because the car broke down so they gave me one of there old cars and I "sold" the Nissan back to my uncle. Sadly he screwed me over again and didnt pay me instead he gave me Palm Pilot (gave it to my brother), a printer (finally using it 4 years later), and a cheap old computer (my dad took).

Hope you can find a nice car for a good price. If you dont know much about cars take somebody who does with you to check the car over. I didnt look at the Nissan my uncle sold me so thats how I ended up losing over $5000.

Good Luck!

I'm not fussed about it being auto or manual as I'll be learning on a manual not an automatic. I'd be a very happy person if I manage to get one on the lower side of £1000 rather than the higher end ;) We arn't starting to save until August so hopefully by xmas. We also won't be getting a car before I've passed my test as there is no point as I won't have anyone to sit in it and let me drive. I'm hoping to pass before we move but If I don't I'll probably do an intensive course or something and put off getting a car a little longer.

I would be interested to know which type is cheaper to run petrol wise.

$3,500 for my first car, a silver with black trim 1970 Mach-1. Wish I would've kept it, but I used it as a daily driver and the engine blew. It had 2 carburetors and got 4mpg's would only go 80 miles on a tank of gas. Sold it for what I paid for it with a blown engine to someone who fixed it got it going again.

my first car was $1000 and my parents got it for me from my aunt and uncle. It was a toyota corolla 1990. It was so reliable and a cute little car but of course i wanted something newer and sold it and bought a mitsubishi lancer a couple of years ago.... I am now starting to think about a nice 4wd where i can put the furbabies in the back!!

Just under £1000 for my MGB GT which I loved. I drove all over the place in that car until one day the engine blew and I couldn't afford to have it fixed sad.gif

I bought my Ex her first car a Vauxhall Corsa 1.4 Auto for £500 off Ebay and that was a brilliant car which came with a folder full of receipts and Mot's which was really good for checking it's history. It also only had 51K on the clock with 2 previous owners but unfortunately she sold it to buy a Ford Escort that was only fit for the scrapyard.

Be careful there are a lot of rubbish cars out there that may be cheap to buy but cost a fortune to run. When your ready to look for a car use the Parkers car guides to narrow down your search to cars that meet your requirements. When viewing a car it's better to take someone who knows about cars with you so you don't buy a dud. The AA and RAC will inspect a car for you at a cost but they also offer a guarantee
