And MoD wanted them to buy their uniforms

THE MoD considered making troops take their holidays at Camp Bastion in Afghanistan to cut costs.

Barmy budget chiefs also discussed making soldiers pay for their own uniforms, The Sun has learned.

The ideas were revealed yesterday by a disgusted Colonel who is quitting the Army after Top Brass were told they had a week to save £100million.

This is on top of cuts needed to plug a £38 billion black hole in the MoD's budget.

The officer said: "It shows how insane the cost-cutting has become. We're having to consider the inconsiderable.

"A year ago, these ideas would be laughed out of the arena. Now they're a grim possibility. They were shelved, but our financial state is so perilous I'm certain they'll be looked at again."

The MoD admitted yesterday they had looked at making troops take vital rest and relaxation leave at Camp Bastion. But a spokeswoman said: "There are no plans to change current R&R arrangements."

A spokesman added: "Our troops are not charged for combat uniforms and there are no plans to change."

But it emerged yesterday the MoD had commissioned a review to look at the effect of scrapping 20 per cent of the Army.

And The Sun can reveal that, by 2015, the armed forces could adopt a strategy called Whole Force Concept - where staff divide time between the services and civvy street.

BRITISH troops will not pull out of Afghanistan until the security situation has improved, Defence Secretary Liam Fox said yesterday.
