Photos from Austria

For those who where interested it, here are a few photos on my one week holiday in Austria :)

Me and my parents always go on hikes on our holidays, that's what we all love to most. Now, in Austria you won't find the vast and empty landscapes as in Norway but I found it to be better than I actually first thought, as long as you avoid all the big ski resorts. Not that there is anybody now but they still dominate the landscape, which is such a shame :(

Our house was on this plateau. The way towards it had countless hairpin turns and was barely big enough to let to cars pass. Definitely not the most relaxing road :D

It's the white house. But only a very small part was ours, as the rest was all part of the owner's home. You can see my parents sitting patio.

Our view.

The road. Yes, that house is perfectly horizontal :D

If there's anything that says "The Alps are here!" then it definitely must be the free roaming cows with their cowbells. These cows can roam free on the mountains, with their (noise) cowbells the farmers can always finds their cows back. You can find scattered groups of cows almost everywhere. This one was quite friendly :)

So we like hiking a lot. Most walks where around 4 hours long, but you still have to climb and descend of course. I think my year as postman quite improved my condition because I had no problems or muscle pain at all. Usually I would've needed a few days to get used to it.

Going upwards is also a got method to escape the heat we had in that week (The temperatures where between 25 and 30.C in the valley :( )

We did saw a marmot (I believe?)

...and some more cows :D

Besides hiking we also Geocache a lot. For those who don't know, geocaches are small hidden treasures hidden all over the world. You can find them using a GPS device. These caches are sometimes big enough to have all kinds of stuff in it (which you can trade) but some are as small as a film roll.

To prevent Geocaches behind found my "muggles" (people who don't know of Geocaching) you ALWAYS need to be sure no one sees you when you find a cache. That's easy when you're somewhere in the forest somewhere on the mountain but is... ehm.. QUITE a bit harder when you're inside a busy city :D

Take this one. We located a Geocache in Melano (Italy). Trying to keep unnoticed is not really our strongest thing

Inspecting a tree. Totally normal right?

People where photographing flowers on the right and my dad... was still fascinated by this tree :D

Yeah, we didn't found this one. We where being watched by people. We left before someone called the police :D

post-2580-13586078258443_thumb.jpg

I also found this:

All kinds of animal hats. Including the huskyhat in Nixy's avatar on the right, lol! From all the places I would expect to find these kinds of warm hats, this subtropical climate in Italy would be the very last one I would thought I find them!

And as last photo: Walking in the mountains is great, but can get very sinister when you're inside the clouds. You really need to know your directions otherwise you can get lost quickly. These clouds are great to from the other side of the valley though :)

And these where my selection of photos. I always hate having to watch boring vacation photos from others, but I hope I made it a bit more interesting :)

What beautiful scenery. Great photos Jos. Some of the photos remind me of the Rockies in Montana and Alberta.

Oh wow. That's... it reminds me of Newfoundland a bit, only... larger.

I couldn't handle the treks into the mountains much though; fear of heights (or rather, fear of falling and hurting myself somehow :D).

Just amazing pictures.

Wow. You people make me feel so spoiled. I used to like the Alps but find it feels so 'crowded' now. You won't see it in my photos because I always try to keep other people out of my photos. The scenery is indeed very beautiful, but I really prefer Norway above anything else

The pics are absolutely breath-taking! Do you know what the cross symbolised on top of the mountain that people were crowded around? Love the pic of you Mum with what looked like a tilted house, till you read the script & realise it was Mum that was "tilted"!! :P

These are used as signs that this is the top of the mountain. You can't get any higher beyond that point :) You can see them on almost every top.

This one was a mountain across our own valley. It snowed up there that day but when the clouds moved away I had a pretty good view of the top. If you look closely to the top, you can see a cross on the top of the mountain.

The fact that I could see it all the way from there must mean that that thing is huuuge, probably around 2 or 3 stories high

But apart from that, you can also see quite some crosses marking the places where someone has died in some kind of way :( Although we did not do anything dangerous ourself (apart from having to climb up a steep hill using our hands a feet one time), if you see this kind of weather heading towards you while you're somewhere up on the mountain you miiight want to seek shelter somewhere quickly, especially with thunder

post-1531-13586078275192_thumb.jpg

But if the weather isn't threatening, these valleys always look great and green :)

post-1531-13586078274321_thumb.jpg

Just for a reference, since it's always hard to guess distances on photos: It takes about an hour to walk from that restaurant/hotel(!!) to the foot of the hill on the other side of that valley. It was worth it though, as that was where I made the flower pic :)

Oh, almost forgot to say. Ötzi the iceman was found close in the area of the picture with the cross on it (in the first post)! In fact, I believe it was right behind the mountain on the left.

Ötzi was found in 1991 by people climbing the mountain. They saw half a body sticking out on the bottom of a glacier. Turned out Ötzi died about... 5,300 years ago. The exact cause of his dead it not fully known, but he had wounds in his skull. Either way, his body was 5,300 years in that glacier and only slowly moved downwards, but his body was almost entirely preserved because of the cold. Including his cloths, shoes and tools.

Scary idea isn't it? Just walking next to a glacier and suddenly finding THIS.
