Blue Eyes
Hello everyone, Ive just literally registered and have a few questions. I had a quick look around and posted in the General Chat area. At the moment Im not a Husky owner however I have put a deposit down on a 3 week old puppy for my husband. Husky owning? Im really hoping this isnt going to be as bad as Im reading about. :
26nikita
It certainly can be as bad as you have read! Your life with a new husky will be so much easier if you research the breed, and then some more research and maybe a bit more research! Plus this forum is the best place to go to for help. It's a great support system. A lot of people go out and get this breed with out researching and that's why there are so many huskies in shelters. If you are prepared, you will enjoy your new pup so much more! Congrats on your new pup!
Paranormal Wolf
First of all hello and welcome to the forum Research is the key to owning any breed. It will help you prepare for what's to come. Look around the forum, lots of great personal experience here from husky owners.
Removed #2
:congrats:Hope you can get your deposit back. If you aren't willing to truly dedicate yourself for the next full year to this puppy like you would a child, then you are not going to be a happy pet owner and you will have an unhappy Husky that will seem misbehaved and mischevious, though he/she is really only being a Husky! Good luck and ask a lot of questions. They are definitely a handful, puppy and adult!
Removed #5
It will be nowhere near as bad IF you're really prepared to change your entire life style! Owning a Husky (or being owned by one!) can be a real joy, they're the most lovable dogs I think I've ever been around - OR it can be absolute hell on earth. Hm ... your husband, sorta infers kids ... take your best kid and imagine him as a dog - that's your Husky; take your worst kid and imagine him as a dog - that's your Husky. 'Course with Huskies, they both come in the same package!! Welcome to the forum and be prepared for the pleasure and frustration of a lifetime!! //al

Mazz
Ditto what has been posted. We have been very fortunate with both of ours. They have been wonderful. But, that is because we were prepared. You just have to stay ahead of the curve with Huskies. Otherwise, they will rule. It is not all that bad, but it does require a lot of time, a lot of commitment, and a lot of love. James
Most are exaggerated, Husky Personalities do vary quite wildly. They are amazing dogs! , You can do loads of awesome things like scootering, Bike Jouring, Canicross etc, They can sometimes be rather chatty , Mine isn't she's fairly quiet! But I know a few who are very gobby . They are enrgetic dogs and do require good exercise, if you don't enjoy dog walking, then a Husky isn't for you , I'm out with Kita for 2 hours in total most days. They can escape quite well and are High Risk dogs off lead, though some are very good off lead, though its always risky. I'm sure you'll fall instantly inlove with the Pup and then your life will change
Marley & Lumikkis Mummy
I agree with the others I think you need a lot of dedication, time and training,
Indigo & Oisin
Totally agree with James there, their personalities are very different. My two are practically opposites. My 7month old pup talks back (woowoowooing) if I tell her off, she's very stubborn, dosn't like being fussed too much, has crazy amounts of energy and will destroy ANYTHING she can get her hands on. I can't leave her loose in the house when I'm not home because I won't have a home by the time I get back. My Rescue boy is 2 years old and is a perfect Angel, he's never destroyed anything, he is calm unless it's time for walkies and he is a total teddy bear, all he wants is cuddles and to be brushed, such a softy! It really is the luck of the draw when you get a puppy as to what sort of character you'll get. Even my mad pup may calm down yet though, the first year and a half is meant to be the worst for any bad behaviour so you'll need to be determined to get through that! Nicole
the husky breed is like any other dog , you must to your reasarch before hand to make sure that ur lifestyle suits the dog , thats why there are so many dogs in the shelters not just huskys as people are only thinking aw cute ! i want one and not bothering to find out there traits or anything , if you know nothing please do ur reasarch first as alot of traits the husky has alot of people dont like , for instince you wont have an off lead dog , prepare for a lot of hair !! and i mean alot! they can be high energy so must get walked/runned daily unless u want ur house destroyed but this goes with all dogs , and they can be chatty back my husky answers me back when gettin a row !! lil madom i find a husky has more personality as more individual to other dogs i have had , and if i didnt research first for 7 years , i wouldnt have known anythin and proberly would be pullin my hair out ! said all that if u do love the breed and do your research ur not just gettin a dog , your gettin a person in dog form as i say! lol there great and i wouldnt have any other dog from now on ! x

I can't work out if mine is really intelligent or as thick as a plant. It's hard to tell isn't it! Sometimes mine will give me a really intelligent look, or do a command the first time I tell them but then they'll do something really clumsy like trip ovr their own feet or scare themselves with their own tail. Nutters! The lot of them!
Andy
Welcome, all I can do is echo what the others have said. These are NOT dogs that FIT INTO YOUR LIFE. YOU have to change the way you do things. They are pack animals and love the company of others, whether it is human or canine company. They don't like to be alone. However the upside is that you will be drawn into OUR world of Meets (where we get together to let the dogs meet and socialise) and Camps, where we get together for a long weekend. AND of course here on the forum The worlds largest repository of Husky knowledge and info. 4000+ members from over 60 different countries. You can ask ANY questions. Sometimes you might not like the answers but the answers are borne from our experience. HUSKIES. . . Whether you love them or not, you're in for a challenge

Nicole
@Andy where i agree you need to change somethings on your life when u get a husky i still think u need to be sure it will suite your lifestyle before hand , i mean like you wouldnt get a husky if you worked all day , as theres no way you can change your work partern , also if your someone who does like going out on big walks a husky's not really for you isit , theres some factors you need before embracing this breed and then thats when u see lil things changing

Tan J P
hello and welcome along:D i hope you haven't been put off yet, heehee. how much research have you already done? if not much, then get reading! either way, there will still be things that will surprise you along the way. they are an absolutely beautiful breed, but then i would say that!! but there's nothing so sure as they are hard work and you will need total commitment to your new puppy. This site is absolutely fab,and you will find all you need to know and stuff you would never have dreamed you'd need to know;) They aren't for everyone so please do make sure you have made the right decision before its too late. Lastly, happy new pup,and dont forget pictures when he/she is home:D

Sometimes Kita will do things and I'll think wow shes smart, then alot of other times she does things that make me go... lmao that looks like skyla when shes been naughty n hides her face! welcome to the pack, it really depends on the husky i think - my 2 are complete opposites - my girl doesnt pull but my boy does, my girl was a chewer - my boy never has , they are both hyper tho lol

Im really hoping this isnt going to be as bad as Im reading about. : I thought the exact same thing when I researched before I got one. 1st thing I learnt, THEY own you not the other way around. 2nd thing, the books give you worst case scenario as every husky is different. 3rd thing, not every husky is textbook and remember Huskies cant read!!!!! (so they dont know what they are supposed to or not be doing) 4th and most importantly I got really lucky with mine!
