Hi there all members - newbie with pup from Surrey, UK

Hi all!

Just wanted to say a 'big' hello! My Husky is female, 15 weeks old and called Molly. I'm keen to get in touch with other owners as, although I live in the UK, I'd like to try and get Molly involved in sled work during the winter months, but have no idea about how to get her started. Any advice welcomed!

Welcome to H/O. :worthless: If you go on the members member you can see if there are any people living near you in your part of surrey. Which part are you in? Also you can post yourself on there as well (Sorry Al I beat you to it!). There are quite a few members on here who get involved in a variety of husky activities and I am sure they will more than willingly give you help and advice on this as well as any other husky related questions or queries you might have.

Welcome to Molly and her Human. :)

first of all

PICS :click:

Quite a few of our members in Canada/ North America and the European Union

Do a fair bit of Winter Mushing I'm sure you'll be able to find out a ton of info from them.

However something to bear in mind that you shouldn't be "Working" your pup until they are

at least 12 months old.

This is to stop damage to joints and ligaments. The damage doesn't becone apparent until they are older.

and they start getting hip and joint problems earlier than they should.

Welcome!! I'm from nearby West Sussex, it lndof depends on where in Surrey you are. There's a club somewhere in tye South that does bikejoring (not sure if I spelt that right!) If you Google it I'm sure you'll find something. Like the others have said you will need to wait till your pup is atleast a year old but if you get in touch with a good club I'm sure you could go to a local event & get some early tips. I don't think they run much in the summer though, you may need to wait till October time.

Can't wait to see pics! : )

The members member --- you do realize, that I'm not going to touch that line with anyones ten foot pole, don't you???

What Biggles meant to say was: if you go to the Members map at http://www.husky-owners.com/forum/memberMap/ you can find all sort of people (even serious ones) who live near you.

@Biggles if you're going to try to beat me you have to do it right (( double entendre intended, have fun! ))

Many thanks to all who replied- general message is not to start her while she is a pup. Advice accepted without question.

So for now should it just be basic generic commands such as 'sit', 'stay', etc? And making sure she 'heels', i.e walks beside me, not in front? Please feel free to correct me if I've got something wrong. I'm learning from scratch , and the best advice I can get is from those that have reared this very beautiful, wilful, independent beauty. :D

Er, someone wanted pics...do I post those here, or on my profile?

:doglaugh: We'll if I'm gonna make a blopper it's got to be a good one. Years ago I worked as an administrator arranging shift covers for service engineers and sent out a bulletin titled: Shifts Not Required. Missed the 'f' out of shifts!

Next to post reply it says upload a file, click that & then find the pic you want to post.

Some people say huskies are too stubborn but I would say try puppy classes. They're great for socialising & huskies are incredibly clever so your pup will learn, you just need to be consistent with the training.

Have fun!x

33 members in the UK judging from the map. I wish there was more. It would be nice to meet up in the local woods on a Sunday morning. :)

Very droll!

uh-oh, we have a serious Brit amongst us .... should I apologize for my poor taste in humour now or just let you learn for yourself?? << tease >>

and yep, that's how you upload pictures. I like the somewhat odd composition with the light coming from behind. If you upload several it helps if you put them in the same message so then when the window opens to show them full size we can just click from one to the next.

Thanks, from Luna's mum in West Sussex - it seems like a stone's throw at the moment!

I guess, for the moment, I want to know that I am doing everything that I should be doing in respect of her age. She's only been with me for a month but she will 'sit' most times that she is asked, and knows that upstairs is out of bounds and is generally pretty good at following that rule. I think we're doing okay, and for such a young dog she seems really well behaved.
