How far do you really walk your dog?

Separately? So is that 4x 45 mins plus another 45 mins? Totalling almost 4 hours? Wow! That is a long time in the evening.

I don't think I could do that

:lolman:No,it's not that bad!!.Sorry for confusing you. What I should have explained was that my husband walks all 4 together by himself in the morning, for approx 45 mins to 1 hr 30 mins.Later on ,I walk them twice, but two at a time, for a min of 45 mins for each pair, only cos my girls and I can't manage all 4 at once!!.Hope that's clearer.I couldn't do any more, not with 4 kids:eek: as well as 4 dogs!!

I work 4 on 4 off, so on my off days or when I get home at 7 pm they get a long trek in their running gear, with the tug line and spliter and cannix belt. We do 5-6 miles once a day, I keep them out in front having them pull me all the way, I offer the resistance by slowing my pace ( this is where you need a good pair of mountain boots ) so I can keep them working as its too hot to run. I still use the bike commands to give direction and control their speed.

If its me and Angela doing the walk it takes an hour and a half, but if some of the other dog owners come along it can take twice as long and more. We do are walks through the woods and tracks where we do our bike runs, but the same walk done on the bikes takes less than 30 mins and the dogs are well more tired out by this. So now its getting colder I will bike them on my four days off and walk them of a night after work, and should we need to miss out a day, so what, they are exercised enough that they wont become hyper.

Absolutely!! Completely agree with you on that one!!:)

During the week Sabien gets walked twice a day during the week. My OH walks him in the morning for about 30 to 45 mins and I take him out in the evening for about an hour or more depending on the weather and where we go. The evening walks vary and we tend to walk different routes each night. There are times when I get in from work and think 'I can't be bothered' but once out I love it and it really helps me to unwind after a day at work. Sabien is well aware of his routine, I have been ill this week and off work and OH has been doing the evening walks as well. He was later home on Thursday and I was asleep on the sofa but woken at 6pm by Sabien smacking me in the face with his paw, saying 'come on mum its time to go out'. At the weekend we tend to take the dog out after his morning walks to different parks, beaches, etc and can be out for a good few hours, depending on the weather. I don't know how far we walk, would be interested to find out how far we walk each week. Sabien seems quite happy with this arrangement, he is never destructive and has gone from weighing 36.5kg to 29.5kg since being with us for the past year.

I have to say I am really shocked. I thought you would be one of those who religiously walked yours for hours everyday.

My dogs honestly don't require hours of walking every day and I wouldn't own a dog that did because I know I wouldn't be able to meet it's needs.

I will be getting a high drive working line pup next year and I don't expect to walk her for hours every day either.

My dogs have their mental and physical exercise requirements met in many other ways (training, obedience, agility, etc) and I'd honestly prefer to use their energy for training rather than use it all in walks.

as the norm .. mine will get just one walk a day.. for about 45 mins to an hour. mon to friday. on the nights i run them they will run depending on weather for 1 - 5 miles and have a slow down walk after for about 20/30 mins. i try to run 2/3 times a week in the evening. ..

sat & sun they will get early morning run again depending on weather / heat 1-5 miles with the 20/30 min walk after.. and depends on what i have on at weekend to what else they get,, i sometimes walk along the river or in forest or just fields near by.

that can range from just a 45/60 min walk in eve to depending on how i feel sometimes longer. but the eve walk does depend on what else is planned ..i dont religiously give the 2nd outing.

if i am off any days during week then they will get a run in the morning also.

mine don't get a walk during week before i go to work . which doesn't tend to be an issue as they are outside during day in their large run / kennel and playing.

if mine was kept inside or crated then it would be an issue to me not getting them out before work.

Hmm with Kiz still being a puppy I walk her for 15 - 20 mins first thing in the morning...that's cuz it's like 7 in the morning and i'm in my pyjamas haha, then she gets something like 30 - 40 mins walk once i'm showered and that 2 or 3 hours later, she then goes for another 15-20 mins walk about 2, 3 o'clock....weather depending she'll go on another 40 min walk about 5, half 6.. the timings are not always that long or short it just depends on how i feel, if she doesn't have long walks or runs, she'll play in the house with me running around, playing catch with her chewy stick haha.

i have to agree with Louise ..i had you down as someone who would walk everyday..

but i do agree with what you say that you prefer to use their energy for training etc .. they need mental stimulation as well as excercise.

heard this many times in relation to tiring them out making them work and use their brain.

10 mins of brain work is worth 30 mins of walking

often i take my girls out seperately and they dont just get a walk they get obedience training for most of the walk.

Storm and Mya get an hour walk every day on a extendable lead. One day every weekend they get 2 hours off lead running. They make use of my large back garden to play/run/fight/do agility in. I also play games with them to give them mental stimulation and they go swimming once a week for 40mins each.

summer time walks depend on the weather if it's too hot they just play in the yard, but for the most part the dogs all go 2 miles each day. wich for me means sometimes i have to go 4 miles each day becasue i usually walk or run them in pairs. (walking the 2 miles takes me 45min.)

this week i have been jogging 2 miles a day with Dewie and Nora(my sled team). and then also walking/jogging 2 miles with Maybe and Everest(my "fat" house dog and 4.5 month old pup). Sometimes i run them with the bike (but i'm waiting for a helmet and some padding to come in mail before i do that again...fell off twice in the same week! :S)

I must admit, I am thinking of getting one of those dog powered scooter (or similar). I don't really want to teach Shinobi commands etc, so this looks like he will get to run at a decent pace, whilst I don't get too knackered :)

The idea is we go out for an hour each time and Shinobi gets a better workout. Obviously an evening activity, taking in to account breaks, water and a bit of lead time for the obvious "output" that dogs produce ;)

And at the end of the day, if you have a high energy dog walking them as their only outlet for that energy will ultimately just make them fitter and stronger, requiring even longer walks to tire them out.

Exercise is important and it's very important to me that my dogs have peak physical fitness, however, I'd be walking for hours every day if I was trying to tire them out whereas I could do the same thing in one training session!

I don't walk Aleu to tire her out. I walk her so she can socialise, explore, learn and build a bond with me. I can walk her for 5 hours in one go, and she will still be up and ready to do something else, so for me, walking is a quality bonding time for me and her.

I walk Aleu for an hour in the morning on a long lead so she can run round and sniff as much as she wants. Then, if I have to leave her in her cage for a few hours, I will always walk her for at least 45 minutes when I get home (though I don't leave her on a daily basis). Then on the evening - no matter the time - I will always take her for her evening walk, which is roughly half an hour long.

I remember @Charley was surprised on facebook to see that I was walking Aleu at midnight the other day, and this was simply because I had been out for the evening, and still wanted to give her that evening walk.

I guess you could say I'm one of the 'religious' ones about it, because no matter the time, no matter the weather, we'll do it together.

blaze and bings used to get 6 20/30 min walks a day but when mum got ill it was harder to walk them so much as i was covering her job aswell

now they get

1 walk @8:30 for 10/30 mins

at 3:30 i take 1 dog (Blaze or skyla) out for a 45min walk

at 5:45 i take all 3 out for a half hour walk

and at 6:15 i take 1 dog (blaze or skyla depending on which dog came on the 3:30walk) for 45 mins
