Darc-Brittany
I got a new sled off of kijiji, have been looking for a basket sled for well over a year. They are EXTREMELY hard to come by where I live. I was shocked to even see one listed. The girl I bought it from use to be a registered Malamute breeder but has slowed down and I guess she doesn't run them anymore. Her lost, my gain :3 Spent $225 on it. The varnish is gone on it and it needs a little sanding but it's in pretty awesome shape, I'm pretty stoked about it! I'm thinking of staining it a darker color because the wood is pretty light. Wood is soooo soft and so light o_O I'd say it's lighter than my other little kick sled. Will definitely slide better since it's got plastic runners. It's HUGE! As you can see in the photo, like seven feet long. Loving the fact that it's got a good claw break as well. Still need to make a drag mat tho. So is my young dog.... Ten minutes of having it home and she did this >_< Oh well, will have to sand them down in the back so that they slant so it doesn't look so funny haha. BRING ON THE SNOW!!!! Eeee! Mollys Dad
Nice! Does anyone have a set of plans / measurements etc for how to build one? I can't seem to find a complete sled anywhere here so I would like to build one, but based on a 'real' one rather than just knocking something together

Darc-Brittany
Nice! Does anyone have a set of plans / measurements etc for how to build one? I can't seem to find a complete sled anywhere here so I would like to build one, but based on a 'real' one rather than just knocking something together I was planning to make my own because I could never find a sled around where I lived, to get them shipped here is insane. I have a tiny fold-able kicksled but it's not the same. I had it because last winter I only had one dog and it's too much for one dog to pull a giant basket sled. However, I have no doubt in my mind that this sled will be easier to pull than the kicksled because it's got full plastic runners (will be waxing) where as my kick sled had a tiny little strip of Teflon and the rest of the runners was wood (not the best runners for sure). I was actually looking into altering the kicksled runners to be quick change runners but I would have spent $100 on that alone so getting the new sled was well worth the money. As for how to make one, there's a great pdf, doesn't have enough pictures but it has all the instruments you need and measurements for everything. http://ww2.michaelshantz.com:8001/homepage/woodworking/dogsled.pdf Hopefully that helps :

Darc-Brittany
Finally got the sled varnished!! Dad sprayed 8 coats of varnish on it O_O Still some tiny spots that need to be brushed but it's almost done, eeeeeeeeee!! Excited! Looks a lot better, almost looks like a new sled but still has some scuffs of a used one. Loving how it turned out ;3 Don't mind the mess in the room ; )
