Hunting season is better than Xmas! (pic heavy)

The boys got their first deer legs of the season today, and they're like kids who got to open their first christmas presents! A few photos for your viewing pleasure!

Wyatt gets the meatier piece - being eldest should have some advantages!

Scout makes some pretty ferocious faces chewing on his.

I should have called him Piranha, because he ate everything but the thickest part of the scapula in little more than an hour. Also, creepiest blue eye ever.

Wyatt savours his a little more.

"Wyatt's all finished, mom. Can I please have the rest?"

Their afternoon walk was no fun for me! It was only -17c, but the windchill had it down to -28c out in the open. Yep, winter is officially here.

The Worried Wyatt face. Every single time he's like "OMG we stopped. Why have we stopped? Are we going soon? We can't stay here! We have to keep moving! Let's goooooo!" Dude seriously cries if he has to wait for anything. Meanwhile, Scout adopts the patient German Shepherd 1000-yard stare.

When we got back, I broke Wyatt's deer leg in half and gave it to a still-full Scout, who decided to bury it.

That will taste delicious later!

Greedy as ever though, Scout waits patiently for Wyatt to walk away from his. The moment he walks away from it, it's fair game!

Wyatt may be a complete pushover, but even with no humans around Scout will not take the bone from him until Wyatt walks away from it. Good boy!

They seem to enjoy them a lot. My last dog loved them as well. Mav has not had any venison yet (except for his Taste of the Wild).

The fresh legs are a yearly treat for them, but we collect as many as we can from fellow hunters to last all through the winter. When we prep the deer we then freeze scraps of meat in mini bags and make meatscicles for the summer!

Another popular thing for people to do here it to purchase half a cow. A friend of mine did that recently and kept a ginormous garbage back full of bones and trimmings for my boys. That helps keep them in fresh meat year round - free of charge!

I've never had venison? Is it good?

Terrible. That's why we hunt every year! :P

Seriously though, it's pretty tasty. I'd say it's far less flavourful than beef, but enjoyable none-the-less. It's much leaner, I like the ground meat better for cooking and it makes amazing roasts. Steaks are good, but that's where you can really taste the "gamey" flavour if the animal has been run at all or wasn't killed instantly.

But the best meat I have ever eaten, by far, is elk. OMG. Elk is the meat of meats. If I had my way I would eat nothing but! My husband has never successfully hunted elk, so I have to buy that meat when I can find it. When my husband asked if I was sure I wanted to hunt next year (cuz he found a kickass deal on a rifle for me) my response was "someone's gotta bag us an elk." If you ever get a chance to try elk or venison, do it!

I will - if I can find any. Thanks! :)

One of my uncle hunts deer (and I think elk?) with a bow and arrow; he says it isn't fair for the animal if you were to shoot it with a scope on a rifle...and he says it requires little skill to hunt that way. His words; not mine. :)

LOL! Well, it's not, really, because it doesn't take a whole lot of skill to make a standing shot at 200 yds through a scope. Bow hunting is a hell of a lot harder because you need to get within 70 yds to make the shot (and even that's a long shot!), and you gotta be super-sneaky-stealthy to do it. That's why most bowhunters wuss out and use tree stands. They just sit up in a tree until the deer walks along underneath and then they shoot 'em like fish in a barrel.

My husband bowhunts also, but he's never gotten anything. His lot don't use stands - they stalk. For them it's about the hunt itself - we rely on rifle season to get our meat. To add to the difficulty you really have to wait for the perfect shot. And unless you actually nail a heart shot - but sometimes even then! - the deer's going to run. Arrowheads are designed for maximum carnage - the deer usually dies from massive hemorrhage. As they run the arrowhead tears them up even more - a poor shot not only leads to suffering on the part of the animal, but a lot of ruined meat. Typically bowhunters will shoot the deer, then give it about 20 minutes to flee and lay down before they track it. If they push after it right away, even a mortally wounded deer can cover a lot of ground.

I own a bow, and use it for target and 3d shoots, but I don't think I would ever hunt with it. Not when there's a faster way to kill them.

My uncle says he only goes for the heart or for the brain - and, if he misses a shot and it hits a non-vital organ, only then will he use his rifle on it to end its pain. He also said he doesn't use a blind or a tree stand; he stalks the prey and makes sure to stay downwind of them. I think he's even gotten a moose or two with his compound bow, and he's encountered quite a few bears that, if he didn't have his rifle with him, would have tore him to pieces. Of course, my uncle hunts in a group as well.
