aronoiiel
To me getting a rescue is beyond researching the breed. Having some idea of what to expect is good but getting a dog that has previously been raised by most likely an idiot will not help much. I didn't know anything about GSD's when I got Diesel. I got him because his breed mix was perfect to put up with Kiana's annoying play habits and because we couldn't have pitbulls here (the only other breed that didn't want to rip her face off when she wouldn't stop) Long story short they kept telling me at the shelter he was hyper but he wasn't at the time because of his scrotal hematoma. I thought these guys are dumb I have a sibe that's more hyper than this boy. A month after him healing up he showed me what they meant and he puts Kiana's energy to pure shame. Seriously this dog goes on for DAYS and DAYS and sleeps for 20 minutes and goes again. The energizer bunny would hide on another planet in competition of him. . .but I love him and am still going through hell getting him trained up. Rescuing is about commitment not about picking something cause it's cute or a good fit or whatever. When your dog doesn't turn out to be a lazy lab (which by the way labs don't get lazy until they are like 8yrs old O_o seriously experience here) doesn't mean to take it back and try again. You dig your heels in, look up people with the same breed, and find something that will get through their hyper little heads. If it requires a specialist's help then so be it but you do what you need to do to help your new family member. Persistence, consistency, and love is all a dog needs to turn into a great dog no matter how much the previous owner screwed them up as pups. At least that's how it works for me and D. I feel horrid for the dogs that are left in shelters because people are just to stupid to realize it's more than just buying a new pair of shoes
