Was thinking this is the way the thread was going to go and its understandable you/we are all dog lovers but come on..........

This dog should be pts IMO what you want to do wait till it might might not do it again ??????????

Get real if it was you or your wife/child !!!!!!!!!!

By all means reply to my comments but be DO-NOT flame me for my opinions :sorry:

You do have a valid point actually. What if they are out walking the dog and a happy kid runs up and wants to smooch the puppy? The owner doesn't warn the kid, or forgets to warn the kid, and yet another tragedy happens. There are alot of scenarios where this behavior, if not addressed, could end up in a really bad situation. The question is should the dog be put down or be seen by a behavior specialist to assess and try to re-shape the dogs behavior?

they said the dog had never done that before - so im guessing unless they are lying (which they could be) they would now take precautions to make sure it doesnt happen again such as getting a behaviourist to assess the dog and muzzling it when out - tho a kid shoud be taught not to run up2 a strange dog it doesnt know ;) shame not all parents teach this tho

You are so right! Even before we got Roxy (who is my son's first pet) I taught Riley how to treat animals, he knows that before you even go near a dog you ask the owner if it's ok, if they say yes he knows how to approach a dog and how to pet/act around the dog and he's 4! It's crazy how many kids don't know though!

First off, the guy is holding the dog by the collar. So he's already feeling restrained and confined.

The woman is really pushing it with the dog and getting her face way too close for a dog who isn't in the best state mentally to begin with. I'm not saying the dog is still "harboring trauma" or whatever sillyness that some of these news reports are saying. The dog is being restrained the wrong way, in a very strange and new environment with lots of new sounds scents and people fussing over the dog. And while some people may slate me, breed does play a part, sorry.

I don't think anyone is solely to blame. The whole thing was handled incorrectly and while no that woman shouldn't have her face right up at the dogs... Not everyone owns a dog and not everyone knows. Responsibility is shared between all parties.

I agree completely but behaviourist, no behaviourist, the dog will either have to be muzzled in public for the rest of his life or PTS. You really can't risk it with kids and what parents teach them, even if they teach the kid not to run to a dog, but since lots of people never had dogs, some parents don't actually know it's not wise to put yourself in a dog's face. After all, all the movies shows dogs being petted that way so there is some sort of misconception going around.

As I have been in England I missed this story but am shocked by what happened. Kyle Dyer a Denver news anchor was bitten in the face by Max, an Argentine Mastiff that had been rescued after he had fallen through the ice. I have just watched video footage of the interview and incident. I feel terrible for Ms. Dyer, but what the hell was she doing trying to kiss the face of a dog that she did not know? As I watch the video I can see Max lip licking excessively as Dyer is massaging his face. Lip licking is a clear canine demonstration of stress and a signal for the 'threat' to back off, yet these kind of signals are missed by people who don't understand canine language. He was also trying to turn his head away from her, another appeasement signal, but Ms Dyer, a stranger to Max, did not understand and continued to put him in a compromising position by her well meaning desire to pet him. Finally after his numerous attempts to communicate his discomfort to her did not work, he had to move to the next level which was a quick bite and immediate release. This has been interperted by some as a viscous dog attack but I vehemently disagree. Max was showing incredible restraint throughout what was a stressful situation for him and when Dyer wasn't responding to his signals he had enough. Max is now going through more stress in quarantine while Ms Dyer has had to have reconstructive surgery to her face. I hope both of them return to normal life but a lesson has been learned here.

We don't know whether the dog is a 'good' dog or not, but the whole situation was a disaster waiting to happen.

I think BOTH the owner and the news reporter have fault in this situation. The dog was clearly uncomfortable, and had it's flight option taken away. What is left for a stressed, uncomfortable dog? A dog of that size could easily have done a lot more damage.

This diagram screen cap taken from the footage helps break it down:
