Pablo
Hi, I cannot seem to find this answer anywhere, Are dew claws acceptable on a husky if you are looking to show the dog. He is 10 weeks old and he has front dew claws, he has already damaged one of them which he has had antibitoics etc. But the vet does not condone removing them unless it is a medical emergency. If i show him can he still have them or do they need to be removed? Any help would be appreciated.
Mazz
Well I don't know if they have to be removed. But at this stage, it would be cruel to remove them, due to the amount of pain it would inflict. Sent from my HTC Desire using forumrunner. BingBlaze n Skyla
Front dew claws are like a dogs thumbs they use them 2 hold bones etc n shouldn't b removed , rear dew claws should b removed as a pup if not then only like ur vet says if it's causing problems for the dog ETA: ALL dogs have front dew claws
Pablo
Hi, Thanks for the replies, some dogs are born without dew claws, my huskies parents did not have dew claws when they were born.
BingBlaze n Skyla
I've never seen a dog without front dew claws , how interesting
Mazz
That does seem a bit odd. The best time to remove front dew claws is before the pup's eyes open and within a day of birth. Normally, they can simply be pinched off without any pain or suffering. But you need to know how to do it properly. I've not done it, and so I'm not the expert. Pablo
Indy's brother had front and rear dew claws and the other three in the litter had none. Interesting, however it is hard to keep the one he has hurt from being cut again and again with him digging etc. I constantly keep using savlon on the claw, good stuff savlon and indy likes it too keeps licking it off. SaraB
For AKC the dew claws don't have to be removed to show, though a lot of people do it when they are very young. Just check the breed standard for the KC you want to show under and it should mention if they are allowed or not.
Sarah
i have in my head (i might be and probs am wrong lol) that if showing they can have their front but not their back ones? i know that can't have the back ones for working as it's dangerous
HuskyMom09
According to AKC rules the front dew claws may remain or be removed, however the rear, if any, must be removed.
