Dew Claws - showing

Hi,

I cannot seem to find this answer anywhere,

Are dew claws acceptable on a husky if you are looking to show the dog. He is 10 weeks old and he has front dew claws, he has already damaged one of them which he has had antibitoics etc. But the vet does not condone removing them unless it is a medical emergency.

If i show him can he still have them or do they need to be removed?

Any help would be appreciated.

Well I don't know if they have to be removed. But at this stage, it would be cruel to remove them, due to the amount of pain it would inflict.

That does seem a bit odd. The best time to remove front dew claws is before the pup's eyes open and within a day of birth. Normally, they can simply be pinched off without any pain or suffering. But you need to know how to do it properly. I've not done it, and so I'm not the expert.

Indy's brother had front and rear dew claws and the other three in the litter had none. Interesting, however it is hard to keep the one he has hurt from being cut again and again with him digging etc. I constantly keep using savlon on the claw, good stuff savlon and indy likes it too keeps licking it off.

For AKC the dew claws don't have to be removed to show, though a lot of people do it when they are very young. Just check the breed standard for the KC you want to show under and it should mention if they are allowed or not.
