Liamfirst
Does your dogs' (I know there is a grammar error in there somewhere) fur seem to get matted or tougher to brush in these places. Is it normal?
mydiamond
couldn't figure out what "hocks" are (darn you google translate!) but no, my boy's fur didn't get matted anywhere even the elbows. Don't listen to me tho I might be wrong .__. let's see what the other have to say about this...
Liamfirst
I looked up a picture of dog parts and it showed " hock" as the " rear leg elbow"? Don't know how to describe it.
HuskyMom09
Dogs that lay on concrete or in crates a lot tend to get more matted in the elbow area. I've often heard it referred to kennel elbow.
Liamfirst
Hmm..he does spend most of the day sleeping, but that is on carpet and sometimes wood floor.
HuskyMom09
The hock is the rear "elbow"- But a lot of laying can be your cause of the elbow/hock ruffing.
Liamfirst
So I'm assuming if ignored this could cause a problem...what should I do? Brush regularly and stop him from being such a sleepy head?
HuskyMom09
it's more unsightly than anything else, it can become discolored regular brushing will help and so will getting him up moving. How old is he? Laying stagnant for large portions of the day really is abnormal for a Siberian IMO.
persephona
Well, normally, you'd try to make him sleep in a dog bed or on a soft surface. Even though you have carpet around your house, depending on the carpet it can be quite rough for the elbows/hocks. But it's not a life threatening problem - ours gets it as well but we have not been able to coax him to either sleep in a dog bed or even on a rug. All he wants to do is lay on the tiles (maybe it's because they're colder).
robke
Mine get it a little bit I just brush it out...strange as they have between the 2 of them 3 dog beds, 2 couches LOL but still lay on the floor as it is nice and cold..
HuskyMom09
I've found that when mine start to show signs of kennel elbow the flea comb or micro comb its sometimes called (the really narrow spaced straight comb) will work it out the best. That's just my experience.
Liamfirst
He is about nine weeks old. And okay, I made it sound like he sleeps ALL day. I mean, I might be overreacting. His elbows don't look totally bad and aren't a helpless tangle. I just noticed they were a little harder to brush. Especially because of the indents. HuskyMom09
Soft brush on a daily basis, this will help and it will also get your pup accustom to grooming routines so they don't freak out the first time at the groomers. Daily brushing will also promote healthy coat growth. When/If the tangles get too hard to brush out try the micro-brush.
robke
I use a rubber grooming pad for these areas works a treat for me..
