Val (Zebedee)
Kaviq is a hoover! He inhales his food. Kibble is not too bad & fairly large lumps of meat he'll chew a little, but chicken thighs etc, he picks up & just swallows, he doesn't chew. It can't be good for him! Today, I bought him one of those bowls to slow down his eating ... now, not sure it wasn't just my imagination, but he ate his kibble just as quickly as from his normal bowl!! Have I just wasted £10??
Mollys Dad
He actually bothers to swallow?! Timber just hoovers his food through his mouth - like a rugby player with a 'yard of ale'
Val (Zebedee)
I think he does, but it all happens so fast, I'm not sure
Hyshqa
That bowl only has the one island in the middle, the dog hardly has to work to get the kibble out - so yes, I'd say £10 wasted =X These ones are much better - they worked on Kiska, and her labrador friend Jack who was the worst scoffer I'd ever seen!! Val (Zebedee)
now, I was looking at those but they seemed to have even more space than the one I ended up with ... don't think I'll find an appropriate one (unless it has a lid & releases 5 pieces of kibble at a time, every 10 seconds!!) Hyshqa
It's not really down to space, it's the positioning of the obstacles the dog has to navigate. With the go-slow bowl the dog really has to pick around the obstacles and will find that especially the last bits at the bottom are really hard to get to
Val (Zebedee)
well, I am shocked! I gave them frozen beef mince this morning, I think Kaviq actually tasted his breakfast! He didn't suck it up! He did take longer than normal to eat it so maybe I have been a little premature in my thoughts about this bowl after all!! Time will tell, but I shall reserve judgement for a few more meals, I think
Sarah
i need to get something like this for Koda!
Val (Zebedee)
I think the ones Steph has posted a link to look good, that is what I had in mind when I went to the pet shop & they said they would get one in for me, but when I went back, they only had this stainless steel one, so I got it to give it a go, but I think I would have preferred the one with the "fingers" that stick up
Lisa n Skye
Ahh thankyou for this thread - i was looking for something to slow skyes eating down as since we got her she just hoovered her food down - after reading the posts i decided to look at the dogit go slow bowls and purchased one - it arrived today and was used for her breakfast - should of seen her she was wanting to hoover it down but as the obstacles were in the way she couldnt so she just looked at the dish and you could see her trying to think over how to eat as much as she could as fast as she could - she soon realised that no matter how hard she tried to do it she couldnt so thankfully something that only seemed to take her very lil time to demolish ended up lasting a better amount of time, cant wait to see her reaction when she has to work to get her food eaten again later lol
Lisa (Fragglebabe)
Really thought we'd have to get these bowls for Maia & Keeto but luckily they've slowed down on their own. On the other hand I don't think anything will every stop Jersey 'the hoover' Labrador & George needs to be encouraged to eat anything apart from the Sky remotes (he's eaten 4 up to now)
Mollys Dad
Sky remotes  Timber had the inner sole out of my shoes the other night...
Lisa (Fragglebabe)
Sky remotes  Timber had the inner sole out of my shoes the other night... Lol I'm afraid so & he was partial to 2 Wii remotes & my electric toothbrush all the expensive stuff the little bugger
Mollys Dad
Ours don't seem to touch remotes thankfully. I would hate to think what would happen if they managed to swallow the battery!

I have actually seen some like that, I think they may be made by Kong or another toy related manufacturer, where the dog has to roll it around to get the food out. Would be difficult to feed an entire meal. I glued square blocks in a round bowl for Jack and it did slow him down, and then got him a divided bowl I had from tupperware. None of them work at all once the dog figures out he can tip it over and spill the food out on the floor...that took Jack about a week! He still eats in about 7 seconds. Well, I have to admit, this one has slowed Kaviq's eating down, but I have to make sure any large lumps of food are cut very small or it just defeats the object (pick up lump, gulp, gone!) flyingspanner
I just bought this one for Juneau as he's terrible for gulping his food, it was only delivered this morning and he's used it once, but it really does slow him down. Siberian Shadow
When we adopted Blue,he was 10 months old and ate like a piranha!! He also gave himself indigestion and hiccups beacuse he ate so quickley. I used a treat ball, the ones with a small hole, fill it with kibble and the dog has to roll it around the floor for the kibble to fall out slowly. It was great,it took longer for the kibble to fall out and he had to work for his food. It didn't take long before he was eating more slowly and calmly. He still gulps his water down though! Val (Zebedee)
That is a great idea! I couldn't use it though as Kav gets fed in his crate, as does Myshka, Diesel is on a diet & eats in the back room, if Kaviq had one of those, Diesel would be eating his own then going after Kaviq's & would end up twice the size!! But a great alternative to buying a "special" bowl

They work great slows both of them right down.

Darc-Brittany
Sadie is terrible with eating really fast. I stopped using dishes because of it, even tried one of those metal ball things in the food, a slow food eating dish... Nothing worked. Now I feed them straight from the floor, just spread it out a little and BAM problem has been solved! She's a lot slower than she was, she will actually chew some of the food now.
