It does indeed help to prevent certain cancers, the earlier it's done the more effective it is. I wouldn't say it would be much more dangerous to have the procedure done at his age, for males it's a fairly simple procedure anyway :)

I don't think that age is likely to be a problem. At 5 he is in his prime. We had an 18 year old neutered last year, which actually saved his life as it was discovered that he had testicular cancer. Removing his 'bits' stopped the cancer spreading. He's just had an operation to remove a blockage in his intestine and, at 19 his recovery has been little short of amazing. They're a tough old breed!
