Rosemary
Yes, we do - on 1 May, but we call it Worker's Day in South Africa and it is a public holiday

Andy
Most countries have some celebration that is unique the just that country. We have Guy Fawkes night AKA Bonfire night. Which although is not a public holiday is celebrated every year on 5th November. We also have "Bank" holidays. Do you guys have those ?? Povodny
Having done a quick bit of research, our may day bank holiday is a labour day equivalent. We also have a few more scattered through the year

England and Wales 2012 2013 2014 2015

New Year's Day 2 January* 1 January 1 January 1 January
Good Friday 6 April 29 March 18 April 3 April
Easter Monday 9 April 1 April 21 April 6 April

Early May Bank Holiday 7 May 6 May 5 May 4 May
Spring Bank Holiday 4 June* 27 May 26 May 25 May
Queen's Diamond Jubilee 5 June - - -
Summer Bank Holiday 27 August 26 August 25 August 31 August
Christmas Day 25 December 25 December 25 December 25 December
Boxing Day 26 December 26 December 26 December 28 December*

Removed #5
Rosemary, interesting that SA should have May 1st as Workers day. For the comment, our Labor Day is a celebration in support of the laborer, it was intended to cause people to think about the workers who provide so much for us and are not recognized - except by their absence. Much like the intention of May Day in the Soviet Union - before it was so heavily politicized - it was to be the celebration in recognition of the proletariat. I think many ( most? ) countries have similar but probably called differently. Now would someone explain "Bank Holiday"? LittleLuka
yeah what exactly is "bank holiday"? Here if you say bank holiday it means it's a holiday where the banks are closed but not necessarily everything else.
Rosemary
Al Jones, 1994 we held our first free elections, which officially brought an end to the dreaded apartheid era. That was when worker's day was also officially implemented - it is a powerful symbol (day) to the people of SA who fought for years for worker's rights

Elyse
Yep, over here in Canada we have a labour day. However I never knew what it meant - just that its the last weekend before school starts and its the last long weekend of the summer. I like how they just make up holidays for long weekends, like "Family Day" and a few "Civic holidays" during the year.

raindog
There is a long tradition of May Day festivities in the UK going back to pagan times. Since the late 19th Century, May Day has also become strongly associated with International Workers Day which was strongly supported by the Trades Union movement. Huge marches were often held in industrial areas led by Trades Unions with their colourful banners: Since the 1970's and the decline of the Trades Unions May Day has been gradually depoliticised and has become just another Bank Holiday - so much so that the government is trying to "relocate" it to October.
