Leyka&Diva Posted August 31, 2012 Report Share Posted August 31, 2012 ok not a husky but im kind of after some advice from some one who has maybe been through this with a dog. my sister has a 6 year old bull mastiff cross who over the last year he a gone off food he will now only roast chicken and now and then wainwrights wet food he has lost weight and become lethargic the vets put this down to a possible thyroid problem and put him on medication for that and performed lots of tests all came normal so they took him off the medication. we were back at the vets wednesday with him and he weighed in at 32 kilos meaning that in 6 months he has lost 13kilo and said he has a heart murmur and have referred him to a specialist. my sister is supposed to leave for australia at the end of november to live there and has decided not to take him and he will live with me or my nan. are heart murmurs treatable? can a dog live a happy life with one or is it kinder to let them go ? what can we do to make him more confortable? please if anyone could offer any advice we would be very grateful xx Quote Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...
Emma Posted August 31, 2012 Report Share Posted August 31, 2012 I don't know about dogs but I and my sons all have heart murmurs. There are different types and mine was looked at in guys hospital when I was a kid and pronounced to be an innocent heart murmur. (means it's not a problem just a bit quirky, lol). It really depends on the cause as to how or if it will need treating. My eldest son's wasn't spotted until he was 11, so it could be possible that maybe it's always been there? Doctors can tell a lot from listening to the various sounds that a heart makes. My youngest son was checked out at 6 weeks old after the doctor heard a strange sound. They wondered if it may of been a hole in the heart bit after a referral to a specialist they could tell it wasn't simply by the sound it made. BingBlaze n Skyla Posted August 31, 2012 Report Share Posted August 31, 2012 We were told bings had a heart murmur when we got him (nearly 10 years ago) and he's fine it's never stopped him or slowed him down n he can still outrun the other two , do u know what kind ov heart murmur it is? HuskyMom09 Posted August 31, 2012 Report Share Posted August 31, 2012 It depends on the severity of the murmur, as mentioned many people and animals live unaffected by heart murmurs for years without any intervention needed....Some like my 11month old filly die from complications caused by the murmur . Its too bad she forwent the vet specialist because it sounds like there is reason for concern, but I'd leave speculation alone and get a definitive diagnosis.
