The Battersea Dogs & Cats Home have reported that they are seeing an increase of certain dog breeds being brought to them for help or rehoming. An influx of Huskies and Malamutes over past weeks has prompted the charity to call for action from potential owners of these types of dogs; going as far to say that they are becoming the new ‘it’ dogs bought for status.

Concerned that these types of breed are fast turning into the status dogs for inner city residents, the charity wants to point out that Huskies and Malamutes are highly intelligent breeds that require a lot of exercise, space and stimulation. These beautiful dogs are known for running over long distances and Battersea Dogs & Cats Home believe that people are taking on ownership of them without realising all of their needs.

Whilst some of these dogs have been abandoned or dumped on the charity’s doorstep, the volunteers at the home also believe that a lot of the dogs are running free when they are let off the lead. They feel that some owners are not purposefully taking the dogs to the home, rather that the dogs’ natural instinct is kicking in when off the lead, meaning they get lost and are found by other people who then hand them in to the Battersea Dogs & Cats Home.

The charity is asking for people to research what type of breed best suits their lifestyle rather than just taking in a dog without understanding its breed-specific needs.

it so sad but true first it was staffies now its huskies and malamutes,

its a shame more people don't research the breed before hand rather than thinking of that's a nice dog ill have that one

sadly its not just some breeders who let there pups got to any homes without bothering to home check i know of rescues that do it to they just let the dog go with out home checking or even bothering that the person lives where they said to they did to the rescue !!!

It annoys me constantly seeing "missing" husky, northern innuit, unatagaon, huskamute etc. Most of the missing ones, are ones that have been let off lead on large areas such as salisbury plains. Im feel for them and I wish they get them back BUT if they had not been offlead in the first place then they would not be missing.

Battersea needs to promote ONLEAD huskies and husky crosses IMO.

Dont like this at all, really wish people would research the breed they are looking to buy, i fear having a husky will become another status thing, and theres already enough of them in rescues without other people jumping on the bandwagon and taking on much more than they can handle.
