Raw fish...

What kinds of (raw) fish are okay to give to dogs?

The reason I'm asking, is that somebody on here (I forget who, but I think it was a mod?) told me Salmon carries a disease that is deadly for dogs, but doesn't affect bears or people.

I'm thinking of buying him some raw whole fish for Christmas, but I don't know which ones are okay and which ones are not.

Salmon and trout, from western North America (west of the Mississippi), and Pacific Salmon can carry a parasite that can be lethal to canines. Freezing the fish below 0°F for 14 days or fully cooking should be safe. If it were me, I would simply not feed any trout or salmon unless cooked, just to be safe.

Okay, thanks.

Er...what about other kinds of fish like tilapia? Or shellfish like Squid? Octopus?

Sea Best sells a whole tilapia for a good price, i think the bag has like 6 in it. I agree with freezing it for a couple weeks, however, cooking is where you can run into problems with bones so if you want to cook something, buy boneless. I would buy a raw fish now, freeze it for the couple weeks until xmas, then give it to him.
