My Internship (Photo Diary)

Recommended Posts

As I've already said it a couple of times I'm currently doing an internship on a dog hotel. I will be working here for 6 weeks (already two weeks in now), 5 days a week, 8 hours per day. So far it's GREAT! This is a dog hotel for dogs that will stay over the course of the day, but also for dogs that will stay overnight, weekends or multiple weeks. Other than doing the regular things like taking care of the dogs, feeding, cleaning, etc, I'm also doing a lot of handiwork which I have never really done much before but discovered I quite like it. Have already built quite some things for the dogs and they seem to love it so far.

Throughout the week I'm a bit too busy with working than being online here, but I do take photos whenever I take a break. Since pics can tell more than any words can do I thought of keeping a small photo diary. I've already got a fair few photos so will just go through them in batches when I get to it.

Also note that this dog hotel features a live webcam which you can find at: http://hondenhotelzwanenburg.nl/hotelcam/webcam.html. From monday till Friday you will have a chance of seeing me between 11am and 7pm (CET, UTC+1). If you want to know what time it is here right now just google 'time in amsterdam'. If you happen to see me, make a screenshot and post it here! :)

Anyway, lets get the first few out!

First of all: This is the (general) area where all the dogs are

And seen from the other side.

If you look carefully at the above photo you can see the webcam right above the lamp post. You can also see the 3 areas the dog can get inside. Most left is a small area for the night. Middle has a big indoor area and the most right one has a cosy place that has light and is heated. All of them have straw and small 'cabins' the dogs can lie in. The heated one, of the clubhouse as it's called, looks like this:

I quickly discovered that taking photos of the dogs here is not an easy task! Mostly because all of them are all happy to have a play mate or just jump at the camera, lol.

And this is Pipi. A GSD cross you will see appearing a lot in my photos

Same goes for Luca the labradoodle which always wants to be in the picture and is willing to get me to trip over her to do that.

And these are two of her three pointers (Leneke - my internship supervisor(?) and founder of the dog hotel). There is this small bird that I swear is just playing with the dogs by landing on places that are just out of reach for the dogs, lol.

And if you're lucky you might be able to catch me on the webcam like this :)

All our snow has been melted and the outside area is now just one big puddle of mud (I got pawprints all over my coat as a result of that  ). So I have no new photos but still loads from last week :)

Daisy. The always happy labrador that almost never looks happy, lol.

Jack (if I remember correctly) the beagle.

I also quickly discovered that photographing black dogs on white backgrounds don't really work out too well  This is Onyx, a Schapendoes / Dutch Sheepdog.

Leneke saw that all the dogs surrounded me when I went in with my camera so she decided to lure them with some treats, which worked quite well

Another overview of the area taken from the outside area. As you can see the area on the right is closeable so that only small dogs can go there and have their own quiet area.

In other news, another intern has joined us. She'll be here for the next three weeks, working from 7am to 15pm meaning we'll be working together for 4 hours a day. So far we've worked on placing the carpets on the cabins (see first post) so the dogs can sleep on something soft instead of the wood. I give it 10 days before they've ripped it off though, lol

Quick update of today. All the snow has melted. What's left is all the melted snow in the form of mud that gets resupplied by the occasionally rain. Yep, we're back to the regular weather schedule it seems.

Now I can assure you that this little dog was white when he got here in the morning. Six hours later he was gone and somehow this unidentified muddy thing somehow got in our area

I had brought him to the heated inside area but he insisted in playing outside with the big dogs. Did I already mention it was his first day here and there was only a few hours before his owner arrived to pick him up?  :S His coat had sucked up all the water, it was like a sponge when I picked him up. I brought him inside, used the hairdryer on him and did my best to wipe all the leftover sand and mud away with a towel (he loved it, lol). I put him in the bench where he felt asleep for the next two hours before his owner arrived. Wasn't to most prettiest looking dog, but definitely loads better than in the picture  :lolman: Luckily the owner had a laugh about it as well and was glad he at least enjoyed his stay here.

So I found an old and forgotten laptop they had. It had Windows with a virus on it so I wiped it completely. Put a stripped down version of Lubuntu on it and wrote a small program to view the webcam. Connected the laptop to their tv and now they have their live webcam always viewable on a big screen which has turned out to be very useful already! As a bonus it also shows how many other people are watching the webcam right now. Probably not _quite_ what my school was thinking I was going to do here but I had some free time  They're very happy with it.
