BelleBot
I apologise if this has been asked before, but when I search the net I get conflicting answers. I want to train Fenrir up as a running buddy but I'm not sure when I can start taking him out running. We'd start off slow probably doing a couch to 5k /pooch to 5k programme. And then stick at doing 5k distances for a while before working up to 10k gradually. So what age is best to start? I've read everything from 6 months to 2 years. 6 months seems a little too young to me, and 2 years seems unnecessarily cautious, but perhaps 8-10 months is better? Or maybe even a year old? HuskyMom09
Running single dogs I've always waited until 15-18 months. You want to be sure the growth plates have time to close and the joints to stabilize from the growth changes that puppies go through. HuskyGuerl
I agree wtih HuskyMom09..You dont want to run them to soon or to far the first time you want to take it slow and go farther in distance each time you go out so they can get used to it and they dont tear any muscle
Andy
Yep agree we have always advised that strenuous exercise shouldn't be started until they are at least 1 year old. and even then it should be a progressive increase gentle to full on over a period of months.
