HugTheBear Posted March 8, 2013 Report Share Posted March 8, 2013 I've been excited to take her to the dog park and get her socialized. She is afraid of everything we pass on walks. People, kids, other dogs especially. So I would like to socialize her early. I am getting her first set of shots on Sunday. So just curious. I've heard so many different things. After their first set and some people told me not until she is 16 weeks old. I mean doesn't make sense to wait so long. I walk her around the parks where other dogs and puppies have been and she hasn't gotten sick. And after her shots I figured she can play with some other dogs. I see puppies that are 8 weeks and up at the dog park all of the time. So just curious. I'd love for her to play with some puppies. My older dogs aren't interested in her very much and get kind of grumpy with her. HuskyGuerl Posted March 8, 2013 Report Share Posted March 8, 2013 Id just make sure she has her shots which you have done good about..I took mine when they were 12 weeks old..they already had their second shots and i kept them on leads because they were still small and didnt listen all that well yet..Just make sure she listens in case someone elses bigger dog trys to hurt her..if you let her off lead be sure she comes when you holler even if she is distracted because it is other peoples dogs you have to watch out for Quote Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...
Chula Posted March 8, 2013 Report Share Posted March 8, 2013 The risk you take if you bring her that young is Parvo (and other communicable diseases), which can kill your puppy in 24 hours or less. Especially since she was taken from her mom so young, she didn't get the regular puppy immunity from her mom's milk. My vet said not until a week after their second set of shots at the earliest, and that's with dogs that I was confident had been vaccinated. HuskyMom09 Posted March 8, 2013 Report Share Posted March 8, 2013 You shouldn't take a puppy that doesn't have their complete round of vaccinations, the first set is just 1 in a series of boosters. The pup won't be protected until the series is complete. Also the week following the vaccine they are highly susceptible to picking up diseases. Thats when mine went but it wasnt the day of or the day after it was like a week and half after If we had to take Daughtry out as an underage pup we carried her everywhere so she didn't have any contact with grass or pavements that could potentially have been walked / peed / poo'd on by an infected pooch. And in the south my mom tells me Parvo is worse I guess better safe than sorry. Awh well. The weather in April will be much better anyways. YOU make sure that your dog is safe from contracting AND passing on anything infectious. However you cannot guarantee that other owners have been as concientious. The glass on the door was scratched when we moved here. So I am sure many passed through here with the many families that have. She is still perky, eating, pooping solid, and happy though. I didn't think you did. I figured you took her out. I am nervous too. Since my mom told me the Parvo virus is worse here than it is back home. I don't walk her very far. Just around my cul de sac. The danger of waiting to socialise (and socialisation is about giving your dog a new experience and assigning it a value, teaching them how to behave in new environments with new experiences etc not just interacting with other dogs) is that 8-12 weeks is a critical learning and development period which is the most important time to socialise your pup. Waiting until 12-16 weeks is when they experience their first fear period and socializing them in this time is dangerous. A negative experience can ruin a pup for life at this age. If she's already nervous now be extremely careful about how you socialise her so she doesn't develop more negative value for things she is already showing fear towards. I'm going to wait until after her second set of shots to take her to the parks and dog parks. I walk her in like this little park ( if that's what you want to call it ) In our neighborhood. Like kids parks and little picnic areas. Nothing like an actual park. So I don't know what to call them. She has gone up to a person or two for pets. But scared of cars and other dogs. The beeping from the cable guys truck today almost made her have a heart attack. So yeah I will just wait until round two.
