What Is Skye?

According to the breeders she is husky cross GSD but they were basically a couple with a kid that their dog got pregnant! The pups were kept in a shed and were very unsocialised etc. I met the mum who was apparently a GSD she was white i think she was GSD I unfortunately did not get a picture sorry she was quite small. The father was apparently a husky but this was not at the home as a "mate" owns it they said.

Anyway i have seen so many people on here with husky cross GSD's and she looks nothing like any of them! You cannot deny she has a bit of both in her as she is very very husky like with an extremely high prey drive, stubborness and woos like a husky sometimes. She has the guarding instinct of a GSD and can also bark like one at times.

But i am just so lost as to why she looks so different to all the other husky cross gsd's! What you all think? Obviously i love her whatever she is and i wont be bothering with no dna tests etc! She is by far alot harder than Shadow was but Shadow is a broken husky :) haha and i believe females are generally just worse than males anyway! (apart from humans ;) ) :P

Ill put up a few pics so you can see her from different angles

Genetics aren't a clear cut matter. Things get messy when coming up with traits (Hence why of all the doodle mixes, only the spaniel cross club attempted to make a standard). Generally, the bitch contributes 10% more genes than the dog. Any others often get into the area of dominant genes and poly genetics. If the GSD was white, he already has a recessive gene for coats.

What do you mean recessive gene for coats? Skye is female btw :)

I don't know, but I've always loved her markings. :)

Is it possible the mother and father weren't purebred? If so, she may be picking up genes from her Grandparents or etc.

Example: I look exactly like a distant cousin of mine, and nothing like my Mom/Dad/Brother/first cousins/etc . I look so different, in fact, it looks like I was adopted - haha!

Oh yeah definitely they could be anything! They said the mum was German Shepherd which is the one i saw they didn't say pedigree or anything like that. And all they said about the father was he is a husky!

Oh well guess she is just unique :P

She has got great markings :D

Sorry, I swear I read in there somewhere that the GSD was white, which is a recessive color in that breed. The mother of a litter contributes 10% more genetic material to the litter as whole, not that the female pups inherit 10% more.

This is a book I really like

And this site has some basics on inheritance.

I've seen quite a number of husky cross GSDs in the forum and personally I think none of them looks identical. Not even close! :) so I think Skye might be exactly what her prev owner told you she is :) even if so, I do agree that I can see a bit of an Australian Kelpie in her ._. guess that would explain her infinite amount of energy :P

If the GSD was white then she would not inherrit the white coat. It is a recessive gene. so there is only a glimmer of a chance of producing a white coat, and only with a carrier of the same color gene, which is not the same gene as Sibes.

EEKK!!! Those are always the least fun things in genetics. I will be ok with my life if I never have to take another genetics class in my life!!!!

I also have no clue what Balto is as he came from a shelter but I have heard german shepard from the shelter, to hound from one vet, and that he is a piebald husky from 3 different vets (we go to one vet but when you go there are 5 vets you can see and he has seen all but one and 3 have said he was a piebald).

She's a dog, lol. Seriously though, I know what you mean when you say it just doesn't sit straight as I always thought the same with bear. She's much thicker set and bigger than just a gsd and I've yet to see another gsd x husky with a two tone double coat like hers. When my hubby took her to battersea after she was thrown out of the van to check her over, they thought she was husky x Akita. As she grew though you could see gsd in her particularly in photos front on but when she looked down or sideways she looked totally different! Personally I think Bear has all 3 breeds in her and that makes much more sense to me. So maybe Skye does have a little more to her than a simple cross? Or maybe not but she's a beautiful girl regardless! X
