G'day From Western Australia

HI all

My name is Jason and I am a 44 year old Western Australian. I recently had to put down my beloved Schnauzer of 14 years to old age which was incredibly sad and we are now looking towards another doggy companion towards the end of the year.

My wife is from Kamchatka in Russia and has previously owned a Husky as have many of her friends and family, she believes in no uncertain terms that the Husky is most wonderful of all dog breeds.

I have always loved the look of Siberian Huskies but will admit to previously not knowing anything about the breed. I have always thought Western Australia to be the last place in the world to keep a Husky happy and comfortable.

After a bit (well a lot to be honest) of research into the breed here, I have found to my surprise and excitement that there is a very active Husky group here! icon_biggrin.png

My wife daughter and I went to a dog sledding open day a couple of weeks and met some breeders of Show Huskies and also Race bred Huskies. There is a very active group of around 200 dog sledders.

The day was a social meet and greet day and was 34C and all the dogs seemed happy - but they don't race in temp over 15C so this is restricted to winter.

I understand 100% shade is essential here and obviously lots of cool water and many use plastic clam shell swimming pools in summer.

So to say we are excited is an understatement icon_lol.gif We are going for a home visit to a respected breeder this coming weekend. I am impressed that this breeder requests that potential buyers complete and application and questionnaire that they review before inviting you to their home to visit the parents. If they deem you fit to own a Husky a deposit is required to go on the waiting list. If all goes well for both parties we will be looking at around December for a puppy.

I look forward to reading and learning from the experienced people on this forum. Please accept my apologies for such a long-winded introduction.

Cheers

Great to know there is another Sandgroper here, I am really looking forward to being owned by a Husky! LOL. Do you mind me asking if your beautiful pups are from someone local?

Hi Jason, welcome. So many people get a Husky without any research and they know little if anything about Huskies. Then when they realize they are not equipped to handle a Husky, the poor dog ends up in a shelter.

So I applaud you and your family for taking the time and effort to research and learn. Huskies are a Nordic breed, but the adapt well. Keep up on your research, and when you do finally get your own Husky, remember we want to see pics.

THanks everyone for the warm welcome! :)

Regarding rescued Huskies, I have considered this moral dilemma in earnest . My daughter will be 6 years old by the time the puppy arrives, and my Schnauzer Tessi recently passed at 14 years, so my daughter has never had the joy of a puppy. I feel this is such a valuable experience that teaches a great deal to a young child, it will also be wonderful to be able to watch them bond and grow up together.

I would be lying if I said the idea of a puppy in the house didn't fill me with both excitement and trepidation  :D

Luckily my outdoor area is currently 80% Husky proof and I have a fair bit of time to work on the remaining 20% (well, probably 19% in reality  ;) )

There will be plenty of questions forthcoming as I like to be as informed as possible. My vet is fantastic and the breeder seems really good as well, but a forum such as this is a great place to read of others experiences and get different opinions and ideas.

Thanks again

Jase

Hi and welcome! Another fellow Aussie yay haha

There are pups awaiting rescue as well :)

I rescued my baby wouldn't change a thing :)

Ill admit I didn't know much about the breed when I rescued her and I got my butt handed to me by her (if I may say that?) lol but I never gave up. Good on you for doing your research its well worth it :)

Thanks everyone!

I am now officially on a breeders waiting list. I am very happy with all aspects of this breeder and am very excited. The dam is likely to come into season in September so we have a bit of a wait. Having said that, we will be first selection of the litter (after the breeder chooses her desired female) so this is good and gives me time to get everything prepared for the arrival.

I will need to get a training cage/crate - any suggestions of size would be helpful.

I want to get a harness for the puppy for when he is 12 weeks so I can get him used to one early - I was thinking Manmat Guard Harness. We intend to do plenty of dry-land sledding with a scooter and will get a x-back when he is mature enough to pull. Any thoughts on the Guard harness and collars? Is there an "average" size for a 12 week old. I will probably need to order from O/S as the pet stores here are not very specialised and generally stock the run of the mill stuff. I am a firm advocate of buying once by buying quality.

Any advice is greatly appreciated!

Cheers

Welcome to the forum :D

Bringing Mia into our family is one of the best thing I have done. My 8 year old daughter Abbie and Mia adore each other, and Abbie is a very active part in our training of Mia, she had taught her a lot of commands, they really are great together.

Many thanks!

I just found a couple of pics, from a recent trip to far eastern Russia - this is when I first was introduced to a Husky. This particular dog was trained to protect their owners from bears. This protection was by smell and alerting the people rather than attacking.  I am trying to find another photo where he is lying on me licking my face. What a great dog.

Aww lovely pics, welcome to the pack!!

Its a long wait until you get your pup have you decided on a sex?

Thanks Sarah,

That dog was a ripper (very good in Aussie slang), it would lead the trails when we were out in the wilderness and was especially handy when the  fishing dingies broke down bang smack in the middle of bear country! We saw over 60 bears in 5 days in the bush! So it was great knowing he was looking out for us. Obviously the men I was with were heavily armed.

Yeah, it is a bit of a wait for the puppy, but we went for the breeder we felt most comfortable with and felt the extra wait will be worth it. I personally didn't have a preference in sex, but my wife wants a male, so are going for a male  :D

Cheers
