BlueWolf
Question. How can the Alaskan Husky have a specific size/weight when it's not a breed? Also, did you know that - The Siberian Husky is one of the healthiest breeds out there? - That Siberia, their country of origin, also has hot summer as opposed to cold winters? This explains why huskies are so good with coping with both cold and hot weather and why they are double coated.
Removed #5
Question. How can the Alaskan Husky have a specific size/weight when it's not a breed? << snipped >> I was wondering the same thing since Avalanche is defintiely not like any Sibe I've ever seen so I call him an Alaskan. There's definitely a lot of "Husky" in there, but there's also some shepherd? (er, GSD). He has the double coat but the inner coat is light compared to the two Sibes I've had. I typically describe Sibes as being svelte - he's just plain thin! - and that with an "all you can eat diet".

They are purpose-built cross-bred racing sled dogs and are not related to the Indian Village dogs used by native americans for centuries. Because they are crossbreeds (and each breeder tends to use his own favourite pedigrees and combination of breeds) they are not consistent either in size, shape or weight. Some are smaller than Siberian Huskies and some are larger, similarly some are heavier and some are lighter, depending upon their genetic make-up. The Siberian husky has a "breed standard" which tends to limit its size/weight to within acceptable standards. Alaskan Huskies have no such standard mand their only limitation is performance. In 20 years I've never heard anyone refer to Siberian huskies as "Arctic Huskies"
