Internship At An Animal Shelter

So it's me doing yet another internship again   Am doing 5 days a week until November at an animal shelter that has both cats and dogs. Cats aren't new for me as I already volunteered in a cat shelter before. The dogs however, are :) It took me a week to get the hang of it, and a bit more for all the dogs to get used to me. It's both a shelter as well as a pension. So there are lot of friendly dogs and a few that need an extra manual. Bot I got that figured out as well.

All the dogs are outside the entire day. I wanted to have some photos of the dogs today but sadly it started to rain in the afternoon so we had to bring them inside. Even their kennels still have an outside area though. So some of the pics may show a smaller area and more bars then where they usually are. I have no doubt that at some point I'll get some good photos of them in the outside kennels at some point though.

Blacky. He's been brought back a couple of times because apparently he wasn't nice. He seems to like it here though as there never has been an issue with him as long as you know it's not a cuddly and in-your-face kind of dog.

Two labradors from the pension. One of the most dangerous dogs because they're JUST SO EXCITED about everything. Have already got a few paws slammed on my face because of these

Max. The blind Jack Russel. Despite that he always knows where everything is. I couldn't get him to back off so here is his nose  ;)

Here's some photos of the outside area from earlier to give you at least an impression about the area. It's next to the dunes so now houses nearby. Unlike other shelters, they're the dogs are not restricted to certain hours to be outside. When the weather is good, they're generally always here.

  • 2 weeks later...

We got some good weather (well, not really. But good enough for the dogs to be outside) so I got a few pictures of the outside dog runs after I got some time on my own today :)

Soldier, who I keep failing to get a good photo of. Despite what the picture shows he's a friendly dog really, just a bit.. "Hey, someone's looking at me. Lets bark at him really loudly to get him to pet me!" - kind of dog :P

Shay. Hates strange people, but lovely once she gets to know you.

Some of the outside dog runs

Good overview of some of the big runs at the back of the area. When the weather permits it, the dogs will be outside most of the day. They have plenty of room to run (and making holes for me to fill every time!)

Excited Dagger. This is the best picture I got of him, lol.

Xena. A (very small) GSD. Needs to be handled with care as she's easily scared. Had to sit still next to her fence for a few minutes before I could get these shots.

The outside kennels that connect directly to their own kennels. When the dog runs are full, some of the dogs can be placed here. They'll be swapped around so they get to the big runs at the beginning of the afternoon usually.
