sammybeans
Hello everyone, My name is Sam (or Sammy) and I'm from Illinois. I adopted my new best friend a few months ago, his name is Champ. He's four or five and is quite the character. I have always wanted a husky and when I had to leave my first dog at home with my mom when I went away to college all I could think about was how I wanted a dog in my life again. When I graduated I moved into a home with a group of friends that was dog friendly and I knew I had to get a dog again. I thought about bringing my first dog into my new home but when I went home I realized that the was too old (he's about 12 years) and in too poor of health to try and remove him from the only home and pack he's ever known. So my search began for a new four legged friend to go on adventures with. I became a fixture in the local animal shelter but I never really connected with any of the dogs in the way that I wanted, I wanted that instant connection that I had with my first dog. One of my roommates noticed my frustration and told me about a local husky rescue since he knew about my love of the breed as well. Within the month I had fallen in love with this little white and black husky named Champ and I applied to be his forever home. After two weeks of not hearing anything I started to wonder if maybe I wasn't meant to be a husky owner but I decided to try and get ahold of them and within the day I had an email from them. We set up a time and I got my paperwork together and went up to meet with them. That connection I was looking for was there the second I walked in and sat down. I instantly had 52 pounds (he's up to 59 pounds now) of husky in my lap licking my face and trying to get me to play with him. The trainer commented that he had never responded that way to someone before and she wanted to conduct a home visit as soon as possible for us. Champ had been at the shelter for five months and when they got him he had been clearly abused and was terrified of people to the point they thought he was deaf because he wouldn't respond to anyone, through their patient work they got him to trust again and he became an outgoing guy who wanted to greet everyone. When I asked why he had been passed over so much (they usually only have the dogs they rescue for a month or two before they're adopted unless they need a lot of special care) she told me that she wasn't sure, that she thought that perhaps he had been passed over for the younger dogs they got in. Two weeks later she came to the house with him and his reaction was priceless, he didn't know what to do with himself. We got our paperwork sorted out and Champ was mine, the trainer was crying as she said goodbye to him and I almost felt bad for a moment because it felt like I was taking him from her. That feeling went away soon enough though as Champ settled in quickly and after a few issues we have had smooth sailing. We go backpacking, hiking, biking, and to any outdoor social event that is dog friendly. He loves the attention he gets and I enjoy having my best friend with me wherever I go. Recently we discovered that he has coccidia after he stopped eating (which really had me worried because he loves to eat), and he's currently on meds for it. He seems to be feeling better and I'm hoping that the next set of tests shows that he's coccidia free. I look forward to getting to know everyone and hope that my intro post wasn't too long ~Sam
