ZachAttack
My little pooch is getting the doggy version of the snip tomorrow and I was just wondering what to expect and how to care for him. He is also getting a flea jab and he's due his worming tablet but not sure I should give it him it just yet as he might be under enough stress with the OP as it is Thanks in advance
Steve
Isn't too bad for boys. We kept his lampshade on for the first 24 hours, but after that, he seemed to be leaving the stitches alone, so the shade came off and he didn't look back. Obviously we needed to reduce his exercise for a few days, and walked on paths to avoid the wound getting wet for the first week.
Mazz
I would try to keep him calm for a few days, no running or jumping, to give the area a chance to start healing and to avoid ripping the stitches. You may also want to put a cone on him, so he can't lick the area. I would also wait on the worming tablet for a few days, though it may not make a difference. Emma
Good luck. The surgery is less invasive in males but in this household it was the male who made the biggest fuss, he howled like something had died! I found that the anaesthetic kept mine calm for the first day but once it wore off it was a challenge. Toys and chews can help occupy if they like them. Your vet should give you an aftercare pamphlet with a list of things such as keeping them relatively warm because the anaesthetic means they can't regulate their own temperature very well. The anaesthetic can make dogs vomit up their food initially although none of mine did, so it's probably best to wait for a few days first before giving the wormer and flea meds. To give them a chance to recover.
ZachAttack
Thanks guys he just got back we had to pick him up early because the vets said he was going mad howling in their cage lol he's been sock on since he got back, quiet as a mouse
Removed #5
He's not the first one who's driven the Vets to call the owners to come pick him up! He should be better afdter the anaesthetic wears off. But yoou can probably expect him to be out of it for the next 24 hours or so - then you'll have to try to keep him calm ( Yeh, right! ) for a couple of days. ^Aurora^
Make the most of him being quiet, it wont last long
Jay
When I had Nikko neutered the vet called 3 hours later and said he was ready LOL. He was bouncing all over the place like crazy so I had to get some sedatives from the vet to calm him down. And he didn't have to have the cone and didn't mess with the stitches. But the key is to try (as best as you can!) to keep them calm, no running or jumping, and limit walks. We started short walks a couple days later but didn't go back to our normal routine for about a week. If he is just too much and you can't keep him calm, the vet should be able to give you something to help.

Emma
Yep, he's still feeling the effects of the anaesthetic right now. Tommorrow might be a different story though! Glad to hear he's home now. Good luck.
