Small Dog Owners And My Husky Shilo

Recommended Posts

I very rarely let shilo off leash, he is 11 months and we are still in the midst of getting the hang of re-call etc. However, we have some friends who have a husky cross and they play beautifully together, and I feel so terrible having to keep him on the leash so I sometimes let him off. Unfortunately, he does have a tendency to want to say hello to EVERY dog he see's and sometimes (especially when the dog is small) the owners are not very impressed. They tend to pick their dog up and then of course that cause Shilo to jump up to the dog which causes even more problems. I've tried to explain to them that if their dog does not want to play, shilo will take the hint and leave then alone as he is very good like that but today she threatened to have him reported. I am distraught as my shilo is not dangerous, he is just a playful puppy. Does anyone have any advice on how to re-approach this woman?

Much appreciated!

The best way to show her you are taking her seriously is to keep your husky on a lead. If an unfamiliar dog got too up close and personal to my ice then ice would get very anxious about it and it may lead to a fight breaking out and I would be unhappy about that to be perfectly honest. I know you said she tends to leave them when you say but really not all other dogs are happy to be approached and it wouldn't be great if you ended up with an injured pup. Also recall in a husky is notoriously shaky no matter what the age so do be careful.

Good luck, I hope you manage to work things out. :)

He is usually on a leash, it is only once in a few weeks we see this husky cross. This has only happened once, which was today but the lady said to me she has had problems with other huskies in the area. I just wanted advice on how to re-approach her, and of course I have learnt that after today he should be kept on a leash even if I do feel terrible. Thanks for your advice though x

Yeah sorry, I read it wrongly and just re edited my post to make more sense, lol. Really there isn't much you can say to her that you havent already other than show her you are responsible and not like the others who are not. Eventually she should realise by your actions that you're one of the good ones. :)

You're welcome. To be honest I doubt you're the only one she's threatening to report. Something tells me she's probably going to be like that with every large dog owner she meets. If you've tried being friendly and talking to her about it and she's still being grumpy, then personally I'd just keep my distance if I bumped into her again. As for the others, you'll find it happens a lot with small dog owners, I get it every time I take mine out. The friendly ones I make an effort with, the rediculously OTT ones I avoid like the plague! Lol. Honestly, I had one woman take one look at me and Ice, then turn round and literally run back the way she came. Obviously got a few screws loose, lol.

Edit: did she say what exactly she was going to report you for? Technically if you are walking your dog in a park, on leash, what offence exactly has been committed???

I think I definitely will keep my distance from now on! Another husky owner told me that once she said to his friend when they were out that we seem to be a neighbourhood who are harbouring wolves! Bless her. I was shocked at the way she acted as her poor little shih tzu was having a nice sniff around shilo, no growls or teeth bearing, no change in stance, nothing! Then she decides to pick him up and tell me he's frightened of huskies! She seems very uptight and her poor dog must be wondering why he never gets to play lol! think I will most definitely be avoiding her at all costs! :D

It's a shame, people who don't own them can't see how beautiful and lovely their temperaments are! We are the lucky ones with these beautiful companions, that's what I like to think!

We are :) The only "aggressive" huskies we ever had were mamas who were laying in their beds with puppies and weren't keen on strangers coming by them lol. I know, I know shocking!

I have no idea what she meant, I'm not familiar with the rules or laws at all so I was baffled myself haha!

I was walking my two huskies and collie cross on my local park, and could see a lady in the distance hurrying to put her two small dogs on leads. She commented to another lady with two Norwich terriers "OH GOD, THERE'S A MAN WITH TWO AKITAS!" and she left the park shortly afterward. The funny thing is that my dogs walk with those two Norwich Terriers most mornings, so this lady was able to put her right on my two huskies. Never the less, this other lady left the park. I'm fortunate with Storm in that he respects all dogs, but will play with any given the right vibes. Betty is still learning - she's 8 years old, and I do not think she has been socialised at all - we got her as a stray to foster.

I'm fortunate that on my local park, Storm, along with another pair of huskies, have done nothing but good for the reputation of huskies, so most locals encourage their dogs to play with Storm because he is so gentle with them.

A lot of the women around my area with little dogs are unfortunately uneducated about big dogs and their temperaments. Shilo has lots of friends, our friend around the corner has 5 small dogs who Shilo plays with wonderfully on and off leash. Unfortunately it is the age (11 months) and his want to play with everyone he see's, without realising at first if they want to play or not. I hope that with age and training he learns that he has to respect boundaries, but it is a struggle to socialise him when he is avoided at all costs down the park by some horrible snobby women. Hopefully one day with age it will all come together but for now I'm persevering with training whilst doing my best to keep him happy and exercised! :D

As an owner of a husky and a small dog I find the problem is the small dog. He will bark at all comers especially the rottie we pass who just looks at him and sighs (owner laughs at us) out and about it us the small terrier breeds that tend yo be the barkers, solo just walks past. Charlie is different off lead when he can say hello but on local walks that not possible. Just smile sweetly and say hello, try to build up a passing trust, she may feel intimidated by bigger dogs and shows it by saying its the dog that doesnt like it.
