I don't think it will hurt to have a second opinion before seeing a specialist. The issue does not seem to be life-threatening. You might want to contact the vet you will be seeing on the 22nd to get their take.

I agree. Especially if they don't think there is actually a treatment that is going to change anything. I would hate to see you pay for a specialist appointment just to go in and find out she was misdiagnosed. Granted, we all would pay whatever we have to for our dogs, but saving that kind of cost obviously would be beneficial to anyone and since it is only ten days, I cannot see what harm it would cause. Phoning the new vet and asking them is definitely a good idea though. I will keep my fingers crossed for you and your darling and if it ends up something is amiss, I think she as a wonderful owner to help her through it all.

Leaves me with a few questions:

  • Why did you think she was blind in the first place?  Some solid reasons for clarification would be helpful.
  • What indication do the others have that make them think she isn't?  Some solid reasons for clarification would be helpful.
  • Have you already rescheduled the specialist's appt?  Unless you reschedule that appt, you may have trouble getting another.  You need to either make the appt on the 11th or reschedule it quickly.

Since I have to keep my reputation for being abrupt, You're there with her, we're not; what I'm asking you to do is look at her yourself, use your own judgement.  Not only are you there, you're probably the one who is there most!

We all, at various times, have concerns about the health and welfare of our dogs so we ask others who have more or different experiences.  We, here, can offer suggestions based on what you tell us you see.  Your vet can offer suggestions based on what he sees... but even in the case with the vet, it has to be your decision - after weighing all the input - to decide what course of action you're going to take.

UPDATE: I am so happy to inform you guys that Nava is NOT blind! She went to a different vet yesterday and the lady observed her, and came to the conclusion that she had absolutely no signs of being blind. She had no explanation as to why the other vet thought she was blind. The only thing I can think of is that she did not react to the vets hand when he was acting like he was going to hit her. Regardless I am so happy! I am so grateful for all of the support and advise I received from all of you. Thank you!

Sorry I am a little late on responding, After the vet that originally saw her said she was blind, i started to notice that she always bumped into stuff, always hit her head, didn't follow us after we were like 4 steps away, she also had a weird eye ( which now that she's a little older i have noticed that its developed into a half brown and half blue eye, i'll post a picture when she wake up from her nap) Everyone else just saw that she adapted to moving furniture very well, they said whenever they would move toys or their fingers she would fallow along. I'm not sure if she wasn't fully developed, or the vet mis diagnosed her. I am not sure of anything, but happy to know that she can see me!

I think we need to drag Benjamin to this thread. His Malamute, Bigby, was thought to have vision impairment. The dog bumped into things and all, but then he was proven to be just fine :o so apparently, it's just a case of total clumsiness. About the "weird eye", it's just what we call a "parti-eye". It's common, and undoubtedly harmless :) anyways I'm happy to hear this x

If that (the part of your message I put in bold) is the case then Avalanche is stone blind.  I've made like I'm going to hit him (in play) and all I get from him is "Duh!! Gonna play?"  I doubt he's been seriously hit in his life, he just doesn't know what an upraised fist / hand means.  'Course maybe he does but he's so slaphappy he just doesn't care --- c'mon dad, it's play time!!!

I wanted to go back and check, yes it's the puppy who was rehomed early. As Emma said, they don't develop full sight till well after their eyes are open.  Glad to hear that he's okay - but on that note, almost all puppies are clumsy, they're just developing too fast for their body / mind to correctly put it all together!

Im glad his dog also ended up just fine!  I love that eye i think it's so cute lol, I didn't know it was common, but i love it.

Thank you, and yes after she took all of her medicine it all stopped. When I went to the vet yesterday they gave her more worms medicine, just in case. I still don't understand why they do that without knowing if she has worms, but yea she seems to be healthy :) Thank you for asking.

What I find so fascinating about these types of dogs is how similar they are to each other. My boyfriend joked around saying exactly that, she just want to play and didn't care that it seems like we were gonna hit her, it was play time to her.

I'm guessing that she wasn't fully developed, also her mom didn't take care of her the way she did to the other pups, not sure if that can alas effect the way she develops.
