Dave, I saw on the telly (some dog whispering program) that it's a learned behaviour because at one time or another they looked at you and you gave them something to eat. But as for how do they know to look so simpering and pitiful I really have no idea! lce doesn't even bother, he'll just lie outisde in the hallway and ignore you........if i was going to give them some of my sandwich, it would be Ice who got a piece first just because he wasn't a cheeky little beggar, lol.
