Hi I'm new to the forum, thanks for letting me in,this is our pup "Rocky", will be picking him up next Sunday.

Had dogs as long as I can remember including a samoyed that was great, but never a husky. Brought a blanket and some toys when I went to see him so will have them back next Sunday hope it helps him settle in his new home as I normally do with pups.

Will have to get a crate for him, this is to give him space from the grandchildren when he wants it.

He will be out with me quite a bit after the new year with green laning trips etc. I'm building a truck and he will have a space designed for him on board.

Advice help and tips of any kind all welcome, what may seem logical to you I may not think of.

Thanks to all

:hello:  Rocky is a Beautiful pup.  1. Rule make the area Rocky will play in secure they are little escape artists.  2nd Rule show Rocky lots of love but don't be dismayed if he seems to be a little aloof sometimes, there just like that. 3rd rule Give em an inch and they will take a mile, so be firm but always kind. Good luck they are amazing dogs and they are like no other dog you may have owned before.  Hope you like walking ;-) but remember the 5 min rule for every month till they are mature. (3 months a 15 min walk say 2 or three times a day and so on)

Awww Lovely GSD.  Noah was a bit of a shock as I had only had GSD's and a GSD cross before.  He was a little bit of a nightmare, very head strong, but, with consistent no nonsense positive reinforcement training  he is now our star.  He is very intelligent and focused likes to play and learn so I would do the same you would with a GSD but don't rely on recall but do a lot of training on recall, long lead treats etc.  They are full on playful and very early socialisation is a must in how to play nicely.  Jumping up is a favourite thing to do which maybe something you want to put a stop to and mouthing.  Once you have their respect they are the most affectionate dog they love eye contact and sometimes the look they give you is so full of love they don't have to be full on cuddle monsters.. When you feed Rocky pretend you are eating first (better still eat something) then before you put the food down ask him to look at you, it only has to be very quick eye contact but this builds respect for you. Trust me I laughed at this but it works.  Oh and buy a Halti/head collar.  Noah walks so well now he does not need this anymore but it was vital for his on lead walking.

Everybody will have their views on training and its a case seeing what works for you.  All of them are individuals, that's what makes them so special.

Hi there and welcome to the forum.

We've had dogs for many years and was quite shocked at the difference when we got our first husky.  Things in particular that are different are that they're certainly not a 'biddable breed' by any means.  Instead they're highly intelligent and will learn new commands in a matter of minutes but whether they choose to want to do it is another matter entirely.  They are a breed who think for themselves and asks the question "what's in it for me?"  before deciding whether to comply or not.  selective hearing is another favourite, lol.

They're very well known for their unreliable recall, escaping antics and high prey drive, so making sure the fences are high enough in the yard (an adult husky can clear a 6 foot fence if they so choose), long lines are a good way to give them some freedom safely and be careful of small furries.

They're very aloof, but at the same time very loving and caring.  Sounds like an oxymoron but it's probably the only way to describe it accurately.

And one final thing to be aware of........they're very addictive!   Once you get one, you'll want more!  lol.

Hi and welcome!  I bet you can't wait until you can pick him up - get some sleep whilst you can lol!!  Crate training is emotionally draining, it was for me anyway lol it broke my heart listening to the cries but it's so worth it x

I did my best to find a pup that would be in the same environment I have at home (parents with good temprement, inside, kids around, crate etc.) as I have always done with pups, and in many cases it's not taken long for pup to settle, but in saying that all pups are different individuals and we will see what happens. Will keep you all posted.....and asking for advice I'm sure lol.

Got up at 4am to set off early, picked up Rocky at 9am to get back for 12.30.

Pup was ok all way back, behaved really well.

Hes been drinking but not had anything to eat yet, ( but they did say he had eaten this morning just before I picked him up)

He's also sleeping a lot on the blanket I got with him, so left him to it for now

update:

He slept for almost 6hrs ( only got up to drink) then about 8pm woke up and that was it, playing around jumping and enjoying his new toys, ate then did his "business".....and let out everything he had not done all day ...three times lol.

When it got time to sleep he was confined to the kitchen, had his blanket and pads down...... Only wippered for 30mins and that was it...lucky or what! This morning he was found asleep on his training pad rather than his blanket.

Seems happy, playful and eating.....when "power napping" he tends to rest next to one of us now rather than on his blanket.

Will see how the day goes, off to register him with vet in a bit, he's 7weeks on Wednesday, just want him checked and schedule next vacation and worming

update:

Went to vets to register pup, girls there took him and wouldn't let him go, they put pics up on the vets web site.

Went to pet store ( keeping in mind he's not near other dogs and not on floor yet when he's out) got food 'James Wellbeloved puppy food' as that is what he was on. Again he got a lot of fuss.....

Before work ( on nights) I confined him to kitchen for half hour before he got company to see how he copped. He wimpered for 10min and that was it. Came in at 3:30am to a silent house, peeped to see if he was ok... He saw me and was growling at me! Moved back and he just went back to sleep not a peep til my wife came down this morning.

So all ok, he's very playful and jumps, explores etc. And finding hideouts, sits/lays under table next to one of us

Any tips/advice welcome guys
