Lil Miss Bump Posted May 26, 2010 Report Share Posted May 26, 2010 Irresponsible dog owner lands £500 bill Published Monday 24th May 10 A woman whose dog had to be picked up from the street when it was roaming without a lead has been ordered to pay £561. Laura McConnell, aged 33, of Isca Street in Beswick, was found guilty of allowing a dog to roam off lead after she failed to turn up for a hearing at Manchester Magistrates' Court on Wednesday, May 19. She was fined £235 with £311 costs and a £15 victims of crime surcharge. A Manchester City Council neighbourhood dog officer spotted McConnell's border collie type dog roaming off lead on Blackrod Street in February. As the owner had not had the dog microchipped and it did not have a nametag, it had to be taken to Manchester Dog's Home, where McConnell picked it up two days later. Councillor Paul Andrews, Manchester City Council's Executive Member for Neighbourhood Services, said: "McConnell's failure to look after her dog properly meant we had to pick it up from the street and take it to the dog's home for its own safety. "She did not care about either the dog's welfare or the effect her negligent behaviour may have had on her neighbours, and failed to pay the fixed penalty notice. I think in this day and age with how cheap it is to have your dog microchiped if a dogs found stray without a chip in they should just rehome it as soon as they can not bother looking for the neglectful person who calls themself the owner and yet doesnt care enough to pay £10 for something that could help get the dog back!
